The fonds consists of records created and collected by Harry B. Hawthorn in a number of different capacities: as researcher, professor, Dean of Anthropology and Director of the Museum of Anthropology. Textual records in the fonds include correspondence, transcripts, research notes and clippings from publications. Much of the graphic materials relate to Harry Hawthorn’s interactions with Indigenous communities as an anthropologist, a professor, and as the Director of MOA. Other images relate to his personal life, documenting his youth in New Zealand, his life as a father and anthropologist, and his later established professional roles.

A number of files consist of family photograph albums, featuring images of Harry Hawthorn’s family and childhood, his children, and a separate album relates to Harry Hawthorn’s Travels in BC between 1947 and 1951. Multiple files relate to Audrey Hawthorn, and three files illustrate a compiled account of interactions between the Hawthorns and Bill Reid that span from the 1950’s through 2000.

Anthony Island slides

File consists of photographs taken at Anthony Island, Haida Gwaii, on a 1957 trip. The majority of the images appear to be at the Ninstints village site on Anthony Island.

An accrual of 20 slides was added to this file in March 2022, from accession 2022-3. Most appear to be duplicates of slides already in the file. These 20 slides have not been digitized.
