Ronnie Tessler fonds

The fonds consists of photographs created by Ronnie Tessler between 1986 and 1987 documenting a canoe project by Nisga’a carver Norman Tait. The project was abandoned in the summer of 1987, and the canoe was left uncompleted. The photographs depict models for the canoe, transportation of the log for the canoe to the Museum of Anthropology, ceremonies performed throughout the project, and various stages of work on the canoe and model. Additional photographs from this period depict a totem pole-raising ceremony at Capilano Mall in North Vancouver, as well as portraits of Les Baker, a model Tait wanted to use for a “white man” mask. The fonds is arranged into a single series: Norman Tait canoe project and related materials.

Fonds consists of material related to the art, research, and writing of Hilary Stewart. The bulk of the material is related to the production of her books on the culture and art of the First Nations peoples of the Pacific Northwest. The remaining material relates to illustrations that she did for publications by other authors, a small amount of material done for personal use, and collected research and ephemera that does not appear to be related to one specific publication. Material includes original illustrations, collected research and notes, book drafts and pre-press materials, photographs, correspondence, and collected memorabilia.

George Szanto fonds

Fonds consists of eight slides of totem poles being raised in the Haida Village at the University of British Columbia (UBC). The slides are dated May, 1962. The photographs were taken by George Szanto, the son-in-law of Geoffrey Andrew who was the Dean and Deputy President of UBC from 1947 to 1962.

The totem poles represented in the images were carved by Haida artist Bill Reid and 'Namgis artist Doug Cranmer. They were originally situated at UBC's Totem Park. They are now located on the grounds behind the Museum of Anthropology, and modelled on a 19th century Haida village.

Collection illustrates the gathering of information and writing of the book “Paddling to Where I Stand : Agnes Alfred, Qwiqwasutinuxw Noblewoman.” Includes interviews to Agnes Alfred conducted by Martine J. Reid and Daisy Sewid-Smith between 1979 and 1985. Interviews are documented as audio and video recordings and their written transcriptions, and other materials gathered by Martine J. Reid and Daisy Sewid-Smith for the edition and publication of the book. Collection also contains the manuscripts and draft for the book; correspondence between Martine J. Reid, Daisy Sewid-Smith and other people; eulogies and funeral pamphlets; Agnes Alfred’s family information; historical notes; and miscellanea. Collection includes photographic materials with photographs included in the book and additional photographs gathered by Martine J. Reid and Daisy Sewid-Smith during their research, and portraits of Agnes Alfred’s parents.

Fonds consists of negative images of petroglyphs largely from the Pacific west coast of North America. Most of the images are from sites located in British Columbia, but there are also images from sites in Washington State, New Mexico, and other areas of the United States and Mexico. There are also images of artifacts, masks, totem poles, wood carvings, and graveyards. Images of family travels, landscapes, wild animals, and house cats are interspersed within the collection.

Tahltan Native Studies Committee collection

Collection consists of ten audio reel tapes and eight audio cassette tapes with recordings of stories, obtained by Karen J. Clark and Tahltan community members in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Along with Tahltan Native Studies Committee members, including Rose Quash, Rachel Joseph, Anne Gleason, and Judy Joseph, Karen J. Clark traveled around the Telegraph Creek area to record stories of the Elders and procure photographs. This work became the "Tahltan Native Studies" book, produced in 1976.

Documentation includes a lists of recordings with tape descriptions, a short biography of Karen J. Clark, and letters and documents related to her awards and publications.

Textual materials include three "Tahltan Native Studies" books, two sets of accompanying job cards, one set of activity cards, one set of photograph cards, and a course outline. The collection also includes the three book set "Sun, Moon and Owl" and the accompanying reading workbook and teacher's guide. "Sun, Moon and Owl" was written by Karen J. Clark, with grant funding from the B.C. Teacher's Federation, and published in 1975.

Kyuquot: Village by the Sea collection

In 1976, a group of students from the Kyuquot Elementary, a First Nations elementary school on the West coast of Vancouver Island, decided to make a filmstrip that documented their lives in the fishing village. The children’s intention behind making these photographs was to raise money for a summer field trip to Victoria, Vancouver, and the Okanagan. As part of the fundraiser, the children made a visual map depicting their daily travel to school by boat and a hand-written order form for the film. Collection consists of documents created by the Kyuquot Elementary School and Mr. Moore, a former Assistant Professor of Anthropology in the 1970s. The collection consists of one correspondence letter written by Mr. Moore requesting a copy of their filmstrip, four pages of typewritten filmstrip descriptions, one handwritten map and flyer created by the Kyuquot Elementary School and one 70 frame color filmstrip that was digitized in 2017. [At the time of processing, it was unknown if the fundraiser was successful.]

Missionary Society of the Church of England in Canada Slide Collection

Collection consists of 48 glass lantern slides (29 of them tinted) and 2 negatives. The lantern slides include images related to four Residential Schools: Elkhorn (Manitoba), St. Michael’s (British Columbia), Shingwauk (Ontario), and Choutla (Yukon).

Collection includes images of the schools, classrooms, and different areas of the buildings (dining room, kitchen, etc.); the staff, students, and families engaged in different activities; and surroundings of the schools (cemeteries, churches, villages, etc.). Collection also includes images of landscapes and two images unidentified villages.

Collection might be similar to the Missionary Society of the Church of England in Canada fonds, at the Anglican Church of Canada Diocese of Rupert's Land, Manitoba.

Lantern slides shows were used during the 1920s and 1930s by the Church of England in Canada to promote the work of their missionaries and to raise funds. The slide shows took place during missionaries’ services, church services, Sunday school groups, and special church programs. Usually, the slide shows were complemented with a text with basic commentary on the mission and content of the slides.

Jean Telfer fonds

The fonds consists of records Telfer created or received during the time that she spent as a teacher at residential schools. The materials donated by Telfer include correspondence, essays, schedules, programmes, ephemera notes and a significant number of photographs. These records are primarily related to the the Morley Residential School, the Coqualeetza Residential School and the Port Alberni Residential School, as well as the Nakoda (Stoney) Nation.

Fred Ryckman fonds

The fonds consists of records created by Ryckman during his tenure with the Department of Indian Affairs, primarily from the 1920s and 30s. The fonds includes contact sheets made as copies of photographs that remain in possession of Ryckman’s heirs. Records in the fonds take the form of notes and correspondence. Also included in records is a ledger which contains census information. The fonds also includes photocopies of newspaper articles relating to members of the First Nations whom Ryckman came into contact with as a result of his work as well as materials relating to Ryckman himself.

Basil and Edythe Hartley fonds

Fonds consists of audio, video, and visual materials created by Basil and Edythe Hartley. Materials include video footage of the Haisla people, which Hartley shot while working in Kitimaat from 1941-1944, a voiceover for the footage which Hartley’s widow, Edythe McClure, created in ca. 1983, a letter, and three photographs of Kitimaat people and landscapes. The three audio cassettes all contain the same 1983 recording.

The Wilson Duff papers consist of textual records, photographs, negatives, slides, maps, audio recordings, compact disks and one video tape that relate to Duff's activities, correspondences, and publications as one of the foremost researchers in Northwest coast Indian history, culture and traditions. Also included in the fonds are records relating to Duff’s work as an Anthropology professor at the University of British Columbia, his advisory and curatorial consultancy work, committee membership and the exhibit Images: Stone: B.C.

Vickie Jensen and Jay Powell fonds

Fonds consists of records relating to the numerous culture and language projects that Powell and Jensen worked on since 1976. The communities with which they worked include:

Most of the projects had an end goal to produce a book, language education materials, or teacher training materials. Often the education materials incorporated cultural lessons throughout. The records created in the production of the books are varied and reflect the intrinsic connection between language, culture, and daily activities in the communities. Powell and Jensen were co-editors for nearly all of the language books and materials produced. Although some of the projects reflected in the records were done primarily by Powell or primarily by Jensen, the vast majority of the work involves collaboration between the two in some aspect. As Jensen and Powell immersed themselves in the communities they worked for, often their personal photographs and records are interspersed with those relating to their work. This community involvement enhanced their relationships with the people with whom they were working and allowed them to experience and participate in cultural activities as part of those communities. This close relationship is reflected in and is integral to their work. Jensen and Powell have two sons: Nels, born in 1978, and Luke, born in 1981. Their sons travelled with them to the communities in which they worked and lived, and on their work trips and sabbaticals. Nels and Luke are also present in many of the photographic records.

The records contain a mixture of research, field notes, administrative records, and publications at various stages, in addition to audio and visual records. Field notes, for the most part handwritten, and archival research into language and culture groups was undertaken by Powell, whilst the majority of the photography, found in a variety of formats, was done by Jensen. Manuscripts and final publications were a combined effort and are included at various stages. Administrative records, including grant proposals, are found throughout.

John Mennie fonds

Fonds consists of various photographic materials and a small number of textual records. Glass plate negatives document totem poles, house fronts, street scenes, church groups, school groups, weddings, the local store and maritime subjects in Alert Bay. Textual records include a Christmas card from Alert Bay Radio and two small pamphlets of photography instructions printed by "J. Mennie, Developing & Printing Service." The oldest negative dates from 1862, though the identity of its photographer is unknown.

Bob Kingsmill fonds

The fonds consists of correspondence, questionnaires, and photographs relating to Bob Kingsmill’s research for his book A Catalogue of British Columbia Potters (1978). In order to gather material for his book, Kingsmill created a questionnaire requesting information and photographs, which he sent to about 70 potters throughout British Columbia. The fonds consists mainly of the responses Kingsmill received, which include the completed questionnaires containing short biographical and artistic statements by each potter, together with black and white or colour photographs of the artists and their pottery.

Gordon Miller collection

The collection consists of nine large watercolour illustrative panels commissioned by the UBC Museum of Anthropology, eight of which were commissioned for the exhibit "The Four Seasons: Food Getting in British Columbia Prehistory," which ran from April to November 1979. The other watercolour is from an unidentified exhibit or sourcebook.

The collection also contains one painting that was commissioned by the museum for a publication (Museum Note, no.12, "Ninstints: World Heritage Site"), as well as a blueprint reproduction of a related drawing. These are renderings of how the houses and poles on a beach at the Ninstints village site might have looked when they were in use. The rendering is based on George MacDonald's map.

Charles S. Brant fonds

Fonds documents Brant’s pre-doctoral research in Burma. As a Fulbright scholar working with the United States Educational Foundation, Brant submitted quarterly reports to the foundation detailing his arrival and adjustment to life in Burma, as well as his sociological research in the community of Tadagale and other areas of the country. Brant also provided the U.S. Foreign Service with his observations of life in the Shan States, where Brant and his wife first lived when they arrived in Burma in 1949. After returning to the United States in 1950, Brant published articles on the research he completed while in Burma. Records in this series include academic and government reports; articles; Brant’s curriculum vitae; a digitized slide show and 8 mm movie; a grant application; notes; and photographic negatives and prints. It is likely that most of the photographs were taken by Jane Brant, but these are not identified.
