Chief Thomas Hunt at Chief Mungo Martin memorial

Chief Thomas Hunt at memorial held for Chief Mungo Martin. Hunt is wearing a frontlet that is now in MOA’s collection - object ID: 3260/68. Image from the A similar image of the same scene is printed on page 29 of Carter's book "From History's Locker," with the caption: "Under the direction of Chief William Scow the assembled chiefs of the Kwakiutl Nation come forward to make speeches in honor of the late Chief Mungo Martin."

Portrait of Chief James King, Hakwamees band, Kingcome Inlet. A similar portrait is printed on page 47 of Carter's book "From History's Locker," with the caption: "Holding the speaker's staff is our equivalent of a master of ceremonies." Staff is now in MOA’s collection - object ID: A9181.

Rufus Moody & carvings

File consists of image of Haida artist Rufus Moody, taken in what appears to be a home. A woman identified as Lucette is featured as well in a number of the images, possibly his wife. Also included is an image of some of his argillite carvings.

Charlie James totem pole

Image of totem pole carved by Charles James.

The pole was re-adzed and re-painted by Kwakwaka'wakw carver Mungo Martin before shipping to UBC in 1947. Repainted and repaired by Ellen Neel (1949) and by Mungo Martin (1950-51). It stood at Totem Pole Park, UBC Campus until it was re-located to the Museum's Great Hall ca. 1976.

George Hunt Sr. pole (Kwakwaka’wakw)

Image of totem pole carved by George Hunt Sr. The pole is now part of the museum's collection.
This pole was originally carved for the Edward S. Curtis film "In the Land of the War Canoes" which was originally titled "In the Land of the Head Hunters". The pole was repaired and re-painted by carvers Ellen Neel in 1949 and Mungo Martin in 1950-51. It stood at Totem Park, UBC Campus until it was re-located to the Museum's Great Hall in 1976.

Portrait of Matilda Jim, resident of the Stl'al'lmx Mount Currie Reserve. She is seen here weaving a basket. A portrait of her is printed on page 43 of Carter's book Abundant Rivers, with the caption: Matilda Jim, 106 years old. One of the village's most active basket makers. She spends her days weaving to meet a constant demand for her wares."
