Site visit notes

Series consists of notes Duff took while visiting First Nations communities. The materials consist of handwritten notes by Duff concerning totem poles, carvers, language and social organization of the communities. There are also some notes of conversations with community members or stories recounted by them.

Creative writing

Creative works written by Duff during his lifetime. Works include rough and completed drafts of poems and short stories.

Northwest Coast Indian Art

Series consists of binders made up of photographs, quotations, background information and photocopied text from published sources. These binders were created to provide context to Koerner’s collection of Northwest Coast Indian art. These albums were compiled by Madeline Bronsdon Rowan, who was one of the curators at the Museum of Anthropology.

Artworks

Series consists of artworks created by Minn Sjolseth from the 1970s to the 1980s. These artworks include intaglio prints, pen and ink drawings, charcoal drawings, and watercolour paintings. Several of the artworks are landscapes, however the majority are portraits of First Nations individuals, including several portraits of Chief Dan George.

Series consists of four files:

One accompanying compact disc contains scanned images of the Almanac, map, children’s rhymes, two Tibetan songs, and a verse for a New Year’s toast, and philatelic materials.

Posthumous writings on Duff

Series consists of creative works written about Duff after his death, as well as a book of unpublished writings of Duff (Birds of Paradox). Works include rough and completed drafts of poems, short stories, articles, essays, a book and an opera.

Stationary, letterhead and branding

Series consists of stationary, letterhead, and folders, printed by the Museum of Anthropology. There are 5 pieces of letterhead, 4 empty folders, 1 "Traces of Words" notepad, and 1 business card. Also included (in separate folder in box 15-8) are documents on the rebranding of MOA in 2010.

Minute book

Series consists of one bound minute book journal detailing Percy Broughton's day-to-day events, including his travels, ailments, visitors, sermons and observations.

Photo album

Series consists of one bound photo album with pages arranged generally according to subject matter. Places and subjects represented within the material include Wycliffe College, ships and their crews, Arctic bears and wildlife, Hudson Bay and Inuit community members and activities at Lake Harbour in Nunavut, Canada.

Missionary resources

Series consist of bibles, hymns, and scriptures referred to throughout Rev. Crosby’s personal and missionary activities. Series includes ephemera removed from The Holy Bible Old & New Testaments. Ephemera consists of documents such as: a letter from The Lord’s Day Alliance of Canada; a letter from the Department of Temperance, Prohibition and Moral Reform of the Methodist Church; a small flower cut-out; a note written by Crosby regarding population sizes; and articles titled “Heaven: What is it like,” “Trusting the Weaver,” “Good Resolutions/ Liquor Arithmetic – Object Lesson,” “Mission Work in British Columbia,” “Guardian” (written by Crosby), “Holiness in San Antonio,” “The Young Disciple,” “The Wealth of the West and the Safety of the Sabbath,” and “Calvary/Eternity.” Series also includes two embroidered and one non-embroidered fabric strips used as bookmarks.

Student papers

Series consists of notes and papers written by Duff when he was an anthropology student at UBC.

Sakamoto printed exhibit material

Series consists of printed materials sent from Kojo Sakamoto to the Binnings related either to the Bishop’s own art, or that of his mentor, Tomioka Tessai. Printed material comes in the form of exhibit catalogues, brochures, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings. A collection of encapsulated photographs from an undated calligraphy exhibit is also found in this series.

Scrapbooks

Series consists of 6 scrapbooks assembled by the Binnings, either as commemorative souvenirs of their travels or as gifts to their Japanese friends overseas for a period of time covering over a decade. Scrapbooks consist predominantly of photographs, but also include brief notes and newspaper clippings. One file of textual records provides notes for a souvenir album assembled by B.C.
