Photographs from Barbeau’s “Totem Poles” and other images

Primarily photographs used in Marius Barbeau’s book “Totem Poles” (Vols. 1 and 2), published in 1950 -1951. Although these are copies of published images, they have been retained for reference purposes. The sub-series also contains some unidentified photographs. These photographs were accessioned into the fonds in 2002. It is unclear how Duff acquired these photographs.

General notes

Sub-series consists of records created and collected by Duff for his lectures including handwritten and typed notes, articles, and reports on a variety of subjects.

Basket exhibit

Subseries consists of a program and information related to a basket weaving exhibit held at the Bellevue Arts Museum called American Indian Baskets: Trees, Reeds and Grasses.

Culture photographs

Subseries contains binders of copies of images that McLennan has ordered, and some cases paid for, from other institutions, in addition to some that he has taken himself. He has arranged them in binders according to culture. He created these binders as an easy reference system for faculty, students, community members, and artists to use when identifying and comparing cultural artistic styles, and traditional customs. First Nations included in the culture photographs include: Tsimshian, Haisla, Kwakwaka’wakw, Northern First Nations, Ktunaxa, Kinbasket, Okanagan, Salish, Tlingit, Tahltan, Tsilhqot’in, Secwepemc, Stl’atl’lmx, Nlaka’pamux, Heiltsuk, Nuxalk, Oweekeno, Gitxsan, Haida, Nuu-chah-nulth and Nisga’a. A file also pertains to differentiating between different styles of canoes.

Subseries consists of a draft icon design for a Museum of Anthropology mobile application. There is no information about the purpose of or plans for this application. As of 2016, the application has not been created.

Good student papers

Sub-series consists of term papers and essays written by Duff's students, mainly for Anthropology 301. The majority of the papers are the original copy.

Deaccessioning

This subseries consists of two files reflecting the transfer of material from the museum to other locations in UBC. The records in this series are composed of correspondence.

Insurance

Subseries consists of material surrounding the responsibility of insuring a museum collection. There are five files which contain information on the insurance value of items. The records in this subseries are composed of notes, correspondence, receipts and miscellaneous financial documents.

Vancouver City Museum consultancy

Sub-series consists of textual records relating to Duff's work for the Vancouver Centennial Museum as a member of the Professional Advisory Committee and as a consultant curator for a display in the Vancouver Centennial Museum at its opening. Documents include policy drafts for the museum, minutes of meetings, correspondence and notes.

Exhibit loans in

Subseries consists of files providing documentation on loans received by the museum for exhibition purposes. Material includes borrower’s agreements, correspondence, ephemera, receipts for loans in, and lists of loans in (1956-1958).

Traveling exhibits

Subseries consists primarily of material from the exhibit Man and His World in Montreal 1969-1970. Predominantly, the files contain correspondence with Rudy Kovach regarding design of the exhibit, as well as with Dr. Walter Gage and various Montreal officials including Mayor Drapeau. The records in this subseries take the form of correspondence, newspaper clippings, ephemera, inventories, plans and insurance evaluations.

Special training

Subseries consists of records relating to the training of native artists and funding for such programmes. It also contains a file on the conference on the contextual analysis of ideological systems. Records in this subseries consist of correspondence.
