Research Notes

Sub-series consists of mostly textual records in addition to photographs, negatives, slides and contact sheets. The textual records are both handwritten and typed notes, as well as publications of other authors. Research topics undertaken by Halpin include Tsimshian art, Marius Barbeau’s work, the Kitwancool, Gitksan art and William Beynon. Photographs and negatives are mostly of masks, totem poles and rattles.

Fonds consists of photographic prints and text labels used in the “Emergence from the Shadow: First Peoples’ Photographic Perspective” exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, from October 22, 1999 to January 6, 2002. The images depict several different First Nations groups including Haida, Kimsquit, Bella Coola, Ulkatcho-Carrier, Chilcotin, Assiniboine, and Gitksan. The label text incorporates information which Smith recorded at the time of creation. It gives name and age (if known) of the sitters as well as lineage, employment, and style of dress.

Chief Skedan

United Church of Canada photo archives

File contains images of various townspeople living in Bella Bella. The textual records include correspondence between McLennan and the United Church of Canada/Victoria Library Archives and catalogue cards from the five photographs included as well as from others.

Totem poles

Sub-series consists of textual records including correspondence regarding and general research notes on totem poles, and specific research on the poles of Stanley Park and the artisans who worked on them. Records also include biographies on the artisans who carved the museum totem poles and correspondence and the agreement between the Museum of Anthropology and the Royal British Columbia Museum to remove totem poles from Kitwancool in 1958. Sub-series also contains slides of totem poles, three video tapes, one photograph and one cassette tape.

Out of the Silence

Image of 2 of the 4 weavings that comprise Out of the Silence on display at the Vancouver International Airport. The weavings were made by Musqueam artists Krista Point, Robyn Sparrow, Debra Sparrow, Gina Grant and Helen Callbreath.

Textual Materials

Series contains textual records contextualizing the petroglyphs and pictograms found in the graphic materials. Narrations include descriptions of the sites and their geologic evolution over the years that is leading to the loss of rock surface and petroglyphs and pictograms. Text also documents E. F. Meade’s hypothesis on how some of the petroglyphs and pictographs may have been carved and painted and his interpretations on the reasons behind the locations and purpose of some of them. The author also mentions conversations with local Indigenous peoples inquiring about the petroglyphs and pictographs and areas where he could not get documented due to issues with his equipment. Lastly, narrations include quotations and references to accounts by Capt. Vancouver, Archibald Menzies, and Alexander McKenzie describing the shore and locating some of Vancouver’s descriptions based on Meade’s knowledge of the coast and archaeology.
