Many of these paintings depict individuals also photographed by Anthony Carter for his book publications.

Fonds consists of eight slides of totem poles being raised in the Haida Village at the University of British Columbia (UBC). The slides are dated May, 1962. The photographs were taken by George Szanto, the son-in-law of Geoffrey Andrew who was the Dean and Deputy President of UBC from 1947 to 1962.

The totem poles represented in the images were carved by Haida artist Bill Reid and 'Namgis artist Doug Cranmer. They were originally situated at UBC's Totem Park. They are now located on the grounds behind the Museum of Anthropology, and modelled on a 19th century Haida village.

Photocopy of a manuscript about coppers from Alert Bay, BC. Front page notes that it was "sent by GW(?) Hunt, Port Hardy, BC." It also has a stamp from the "Department of Mines geological Survey, received Mar 26, 1924. Division of Anthropology."

Kyuquot from the air

An image of an aerial view of the Kyuquot village. According to the documentation included with the filmstrip, the description of the image states "Kyuquot from the air. You can see Walter's Island and out into the Pacific Ocean. The next Island to the right is Aktis Island, the ancestral home of the Kyuquot Band. In the early 1800's the Kyuquot Band was the largest on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. However one night in 1855 the Clayoquots, enemies to the Kyoquots, surprised the Kyuquot Village on Atkis Isl., cut off the heads of the Kyuquot warriers, took the women as slaves, and set fire to the village. Most of the village was destroyed during this, the last tribal war fought on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. A few years ago most of the Kyuquot Band left Atkis Island and moved into Walter's Cove."

Winter storm

Kyuquot Elementary School
