Kitwanga totem poles

Image depicts several totem poles standing in a row. Read's pencil notes suggest that these are the Poles of Arteeh at Kitwanga .The pole second to the right is called the Pole of the Mountain Lion. See also items a034845 and a034846.

Kwakiutl Totem Pole

View of a Kwakiutl totem pole on Alert Bay, Cormorant Island, British Columbia. Pole stands in Nimpkish Band Cemetery and was carved by Willie Seaweed with Joe Seaweed. It is a memorial to Billie Moon and was carved in 1931. It depicts a Thunderbird grasping the head of Dzoonokwa, a giantess. Kwakiutl, raven totem pole #3, Totem Park, UBC, Vancouver

Carved by Charlie James c. 1900 (Fort Rupert). Collected by Marius Barbeau and Arthur Price. The pole was re-adzed and re-painted by Kwakwaka'wakw carver Mungo Martin before shipping in 1947. Repainted and repaired by Ellen Neel (1949) and by Mungo Martin (1950-51). It stood at Totem Pole Park, UBC Campus until it was re-located to the Museum's Great Hall c. 1976.

Masset Village

Image depicts canoes, house, house posts, and totem poles on a shoreline in Masset, Haida Gwaii, B. C. Handwritten inscription on the verso reads "This is a Indian Village in Masset B. C. at the turn of the century. As you can see there are a lot of wooden shacks, totem poles and canoes. it is a very wild and remote area [redacted]. grandfather Crosby used to travel to these remoat [sic] villages by canoe." Image appears to be reproduction of a039351.

MAYNARD, VICTORIA, . . . B. C." Handwritten inscription on the border reads "Massett [sic] Village Q. Ch. Is." Printed on the verso is the photographer information with the inscription "R. Maynard, Photographic Artist, AND DEALER IN ALL KINDS OF PHOTOGRAPHIC MATERIALS, COR. OF DOUGLAS AND JOHNSON STS., VICTORIA, B. C. -- Views of British Columbia and Vancouver Island for Sale." A handwritten inscription reads "Indian Totems Queen Charlotte's Island".
