File consists of images of Alert Bay, a village located on Comorant Island, off of the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, BC. Subjects include a memorial and memorial pole raising for Kwakiutl Chief Mungo Martin, scenery from the area, a cemetery, totem poles, and Chief Johnson of Fort Rupert BC.

Minn Sjoselth Paintings 73-75 Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka'wakw)

File consists of slides depicting Minn Sjolseth's paintings and labeled "Longhouse Posts Totem, Village Island, BC, 1974," "Kitwanga Village, 1967," "'Intermission' Kwakiutl, 1974," "Kwakiutl Totems, Alert Bay 1971,", "Last Totem of Skidegate QCI," "Native Cariboo Child, 1973," "Final Rest 1973," "Kwakiutl Totem 1973," "Dominic Charlie, Weather Prophet, Squamish Tribe, 1972," "Wilderness Watch, 1973," and "Basket Weaver." Many of these paintings depict individuals also photographed by Anthony Carter for his book publications.

Research

The series consists primarily of material accumulated and/or created by Gillian Darling Kovanic during her travels abroad, both as a student of anthropology and a filmmaker. This series includes field research conducted by Kovanic with the Kalash in Pakistan, the Kom/Kati tribes in Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Orissa in India, the Haida on the Queen Charlotte Islands [Haida Gwaii], British Columbia and the Kwakwaka’wakw in Alert Bay, British Columbia. Much of her fieldwork is made up of a study of the languages and cultural practices of the people being studied.

Included in the series are eleven field notebooks, a handwritten Kalash’a dictionary, a notebook containing information on the ethnographic materials collected by Darling, which now reside with the Royal Ontario Museum, and approximately 4502 photographs, including slides, negatives, prints and digital photos. Also included are a number of academic and popular articles collected by Kovanic, which compliment her field research, including a unique, handwritten article by Wazir Ali Shah, secretary to the last ruler of Chital, Mehtar, in 1977, which was written after the original manuscript was lost. The series also contains published material, comprised of a teaching kit titled “Kalash Bread-making: From Field to Feast” and the Wakhi Language Book by Haqiqat Ali.

Item consists of a recording of the Learning Kwak’wala book 6: Saying Everyday Things, and it features Agnes Cranmer, Margaret Cook, and Jay Powell engaging in vocabulary and grammar exercises in the workbook, Jay Powell asks the questions in English and Agnes Cranmer and Margaret Cook give the response in Kwak’wala; Side A: pages 27-42, continues with the exercises on page 27, and covers the future tense, the past tense, plural we endings distinguishing between ones that include or exclude someone, plural you form, the forms of plural they that distinguish between whether the group is present or absent, and the grammar to say "to eat"; Side B: pages 43-54, and continues with the exercises for the verb "to eat, and covers yes/no dialogues, and the grammar for "do," "am," and "very," and stops halfway through the vocabulary on page 54. Jay Powell mistakenly introduces the tape as side one, but begins where side stopped. Recorded on both sides.

Collection illustrates the gathering of information and writing of the book “Paddling to Where I Stand : Agnes Alfred, Qwiqwasutinuxw Noblewoman.” Includes interviews to Agnes Alfred conducted by Martine J. Reid and Daisy Sewid-Smith between 1979 and 1985. Interviews are documented as audio and video recordings and their written transcriptions, and other materials gathered by Martine J. Reid and Daisy Sewid-Smith for the edition and publication of the book. Collection also contains the manuscripts and draft for the book; correspondence between Martine J. Reid, Daisy Sewid-Smith and other people; eulogies and funeral pamphlets; Agnes Alfred’s family information; historical notes; and miscellanea. Collection includes photographic materials with photographs included in the book and additional photographs gathered by Martine J. Reid and Daisy Sewid-Smith during their research, and portraits of Agnes Alfred’s parents.

Item consists of a recording of the Learning Kwak’wala book 9: Workbook and accompanies Book 6: Saying Everyday Things, and it features Agnes Cranmer, Margaret Cook, and Jay Powell engaging in vocabulary and grammar exercises in the workbook, Jay Powell asks the questions in English and Agnes Cranmer and Margaret Cook give the response in Kwak’wala; Side A: pages 33-57, continues from the rest of the exercise on page 33, and skips the game portions of the workbook. While Jay Powell says that the answers for the game portions are on side B, no audio was recorded on that side. Recorded on Side A, no sound on Side B.

Kwakwaka'wakw

File contains a combination of images of Kwakwaka'wakw artifacts housed in various museums and images of historical Kwakwaka'wakw villages on Vancouver Island and along the Northwest Coast of British Columbia. Artifacts include totem poles, bentwood boxes, carvings, masks, and Kwakwaka'wakw artwork such as paintings and drawings. There are historical photographs of the following villages: Gwat'sinuxw (Quatsino), Kwikwasutinuxw (Gilford Island), A'wa'etlala Village (Knight's Inlet), Mamalikala (Village Island), Wiwekalu Village of T'la'mataxw (Campbell River), Kwixa Village (Salmon River), Dunaxda'xw Village (New Vancouver), and Gwa'sala Village (Smith Inlet). The textual records include information about some of the photographs, identifying items such as the people, the villages, and/or the artifacts depicted in the photographs.

Book 1: My Village, My House

Item consists of a recording of Learning Kwak'wala: Book 1 My Village My House, and it features Agnes Cranmer, Margaret Cook, and Jay Powell engaging in vocabulary and grammar exercises in the workbook, Jay Powell asks the questions in English and Agnes Cranmer and Margaret Cook give the response in Kwak'wala; Side A: pages 36, 4-18 begins with the Kwak'wala alphabet, and covers the vocabulary for the types of houses and villages, places in the villages their locations with a focus on Alert Bay and surrounding villages, where someone is going, asking what something is, things found at the breakwater, things found at the grocery store and how to express when someone wants something, things found in a school and phrases used in a school setting, vocabulary for things found in nature and how to describe the weather, for the English translation of bak'wam "Indian" is used; Side B: pages 19-33, and covers things used when camping and where things are in the camp, parts of a house and things found there, grammar for who owns a house, vocabulary associated with cooking, eating, and the kitchen, items found in the living room, items found in the bathroom, things in the bedroom, numbers and how to say how many houses and boats there are. Item consists of a recording of Learning Kwak'wala: Book 2 My Family My Friends, and it features Agnes Cranmer, Margaret Cook, and Jay Powell engaging in vocabulary and grammar exercises in the workbook, Jay Powell asks the questions in English and Agnes Cranmer and Margaret Cook give the response in Kwak'wala; Side A: pages 31, 4-19 , starts with the alphabet sheet at the end of the workbook, and then covers the vocabulary for family members, grammar to express someone's family relationships, words to distinguish people by age, if someone knows someone else, words to describe people and the distinction when they are or are not present; Side B: pages 19-31, and continues how to describe people, and the distinction when they are or are not present, vocabulary for someone's job, counting how many family members someone has, vocabulary on asking is someone is Nimpkish and where they are from and the distinction between asking a man or a woman, vocabulary for where someone live, if someone knows how to speak Kwak'wala, and a review of the alphabet and suffixes used for pronouns and subjects, when describing someone who performs dances the English translation uses "Indian Dancer."
