Personal Records

Series consists of records (primarily photographic slides) documenting Minn Sjolseth's travels with her husband Anthony Carter to visit events and communities at locations including Haida Gwaii, Ketchikan, Kitwancool, Kingcome Inlet, Kispiox, Gitsegukla, Kitwanga and Skidegate among others. The contents of the series reflect First Nations cultures in British Columbia throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including Haida, Nuu-Chah-Nulth, Skwxwú7mesh, Nisga'a, Kwakwaka'wakw. The photographs document potlatches, totem poles, villages, landscapes, as well as portraits of individuals. The series also contains files with a small number of photographs documenting Sjolseth's paintings on these subjects, as well as Sjolseth at work on her art on location in these communities and locations.

Paintings 1970s-1980s, mostly watercolour

File consists of slides documenting Minn Sjolseth's paintings and exhibitions, including paintings depicting Totem poles from the 1970s-1980s, paintings depicting Mexico, and other scenics.

Minn Sjoselth Paintings 73-75 Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka'wakw)

File consists of slides depicting Minn Sjolseth's paintings and labeled "Longhouse Posts Totem, Village Island, BC, 1974," "Kitwanga Village, 1967," "'Intermission' Kwakiutl, 1974," "Kwakiutl Totems, Alert Bay 1971,", "Last Totem of Skidegate QCI," "Native Cariboo Child, 1973," "Final Rest 1973," "Kwakiutl Totem 1973," "Dominic Charlie, Weather Prophet, Squamish Tribe, 1972," "Wilderness Watch, 1973," and "Basket Weaver." Many of these paintings depict individuals also photographed by Anthony Carter for his book publications.

Minn Sjolseth's sketchbook

File consists of a sketchbook put together by Minn Sjolseth containing some of her drawings, as well as newspaper clippings about her and her work and photographic documentation of her artworks and exhibitions.

The fonds reflects Minn Sjolseth's artistic career and travels to First Nations communities throughout British Columbia and Alaska with her husband Anthony Carter. Contents of the fonds depict First Nations cultures in British Columbia between 1960 and 1980, including Haida, Coast Salish, Kwakwaka'wakw, Gitsegukla, Kispiox, and Nisga'a. Several of the contents depict notable figures, including Chief Dan George and August Jacks.

The fonds includes textual records including correspondence, ephemera, newspaper clippings; graphic materials such as photographs, slides, negatives, and transparencies that depict Sjolseth’s travels and artworks; and artworks produced by Sjolseth including paintings, drawings, and prints.

Minn Sjolseth

Minn Sjolseth exhibition materials

File consists of exhibition related materials, including pamphlets from Minn Sjolseth's exhibitions, copies of clippings from her artist file at the Glenbow Museum, newspaper clippings about Sjolseth and her husband Anthony Carter, photographs taken by Carter and annotated by Sjolseth in Norwegian, photographs of Sjolseth's artworks, and negatives from her exhibition at Prince George Art Gallery.

Minn Paintings

File mainly consists of slides documenting Minn Sjolseth's paintings. There is also one slide depicting Minn Sjolseth with August Jacks.

Ketchikan and Kitwancool Totems and Views

File consists of slides depicting totems and views labeled as in Kispiox, Kitwancool, Ketchikan, Haida, Kitseguckla, Skedans, and Kingcome. File also consists of slides documenting two of Minn Sjolseth's paintings entitled "En av de Siste" (sp?) and "Peace."

In the Middle

File consists of a painting done by Minn Sjolseth. The donor notes that the painting depicts a girl would became the lead in The Ecstasy of Rita Joe, and an oil version of the painting also exists.

Haines Alaska and Caspar (Ketchikan 1966)

File consists of slides depicting one of Minn Sjolseth's paintings ("Village Watch"), Sjolseth working on a painting, a slide bearing the caption "Queen Ch. Island group," and several slides captioned "Caspar at Ketchikan."

Estate of Minn Sjolseth, images and letters, 1995

File consists of photographic documentation of Minn Sjolseth's paintings, other textual records related to her artworks (appraisal documents, price lists complied by Laila Campbell), and a pamphlet from Sjolseth's 1994 retrospective show in Norway with notes and annotations.
