Aboriginal Cultural Stewardship Programme

Series documents the development and implementation of the Aboriginal Cultural Stewardship Program (ACSP) at MOA, an educational program which Pam Brown designed in 1994-1995. The Aboriginal Cultural Stewardship Program was similar to the Aboriginal Museum Internship Programme in that it provided native participants with practical training in how to develop low-cost, effective displays and resource materials on cultural subjects; ACSP, however, was a more in-depth educational program than AMIP and was six weeks long instead of three. Records in this series include reports, correspondence, press releases, and evaluation forms of interns and the program itself.

Aboriginal Museum Internship Programme

Series includes records relating to Pam Brown’s role as an instructor with the Aboriginal Museum Internship Programme, a three-week program that aimed at teaching native participants the skills necessary to produce inexpensive exhibits and source books for their communities. Records include memoranda, reports, program evaluations by interns, a curriculum outline, and photographs.

Abundant Rivers records

Series consists of images found in or related to Carter’s 1972 published work. Focus is on photographic representations of First Nations communities and individuals throughout British Columbia, including multiple images of Chief Dan George (Tsleil-Waututh nation). Series also includes images of totem poles and villages of Ans’pa yaxw (Kispiox) and Gitsegukla nations. Files are generally arranged chronologically according to subject matter and/or locality. Except where noted with square brackets, the titles for files and items in this series were taken from annotations on the original material.

Additional planning committees

Series consists of documentation from two additional committees that played a role in planning the Museum of Anthropology building. Material includes correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, and other planning documents.

The series is divided into two subseries, one for each committee (the Senate Building Needs Committee and the Users`Committee).

Administration and Planning

Series consists of general administrative records for the Collections unit at MOA, as well as planning documents for specific MOA exhibits. Material includes correspondence, object lists, object condition reports, exhibit travel schedules, and other general collections and exhibit planning records. The series is divided into two subseries:
A. General Collections administration
B. Exhibitions.

Administration files

Series consists of textual records related to Dr. Halpin’s administrative activities while she was the curator of Ethnology at the Museum of Anthropology. Records include correspondence, memoranda, reports, minutes, applications, agendas, grants, budgets, exhibition schedules, newsletters, pamphlets and internal review reports related to museum policies and the development of the museum’s acquisition policy. There are also records related to various committees, curriculum reports, and acquisition evaluations for specific items which were considered for purchase by the museum.

Administration, public relations and correspondence

Series consists of records relating to McLennan’s administrative role as a curator at the MOA, including public relations (interviews given, lectures given, publications about the museum and his work), annual reports and correspondence (inquiries from interested parties regarding certain artifacts, events, people and donations at the museum). The majority of this series presents itself in textual records, however there are also digital records included as well. There are a large number of digital images in the file ‘Photographs’ which depict various stages in the museum development of MOA, significant artists, MOA grounds and landscape, special events and visitors and milestone occasions.

Administrative files

Series consists of correspondence, interdepartmental memoranda, loan requests and commissions, exhibit receipts, exhibit proposals and forms including blank forms, policy drafts, news releases, pamphlets, minutes of committee meetings, budgets, agendas, exhibition and gallery schedules, exhibition lists, facility reports, expense claims, installation invoice, handwritten notations, photographs, and slides. These records relate to the administrative duties carried out by Carol Mayer either in relation to exhibitions or other miscellaneous events such as courses taught at Emily Carr College of Art and Design, conference planning and participation on a provincial Task Force on Museum and First Nations.

Artwork and Exhibition Records

Series consists of records documenting Minn Sjolseth’s practice as a painter and printmaker from the 1960s to the 1990s. Records include photographic documentation of Sjolseth’s paintings, other artwork, and exhibitions; newspaper clippings and other ephemera related to her artistic career; invitations, press releases, and one sheets from several of her exhibitions; textual records relating to her artworks and artistic career (including price lists, appraisal documents, and artist files from institutions); biographical and memorial pamphlets about Sjolseth; a scrapbook containing photographs and ephemera related to her art practice and personal life; and a sketchbook containing drawings and ephemera.

Artworks

Series consists of artworks created by Minn Sjolseth from the 1970s to the 1980s. These artworks include intaglio prints, pen and ink drawings, charcoal drawings, and watercolour paintings. Several of the artworks are landscapes, however the majority are portraits of First Nations individuals, including several portraits of Chief Dan George.

Audio Reels

Items are recordings of material used in the soundtrack for the film Celebration of the Raven.

Bill Reid

Series consists of records created and collected by McLennan relating to Bill Reid and his art held both in private collections and at the MOA. Projects included in these records are the installation of Raven and the First Men in the MOA and The Spirit of Haida Gwaii at the Vancouver International Airport. Photographs also document jewelry designed by Bill Reid, along with small sculptures, large scale sculptures, ivory and argillite works and drums.

Books

Series consists of material related to books written and illustrated by Stewart. Material includes collected research, notes, sketches and illustrations, photographs, correspondence, book drafts, and pre-press materials. Material is grouped into subseries based by book. The series does not contain material related to all of Stewart's publication. The first subseries contains the first book that Hilary wrote, but did not publish.

Building and spaces

Series consists of materials related to the Museum of Anthropology's physical building and spaces. Record types include newspaper clippings, press releases, pamphlets, flyers, invitations, and programmes. The series is divided into 4 files, grouping together materials related to specific features of MOA's building and spaces:

CFI Partnership of peoples project

Series contains records pertaining to the Canada Foundation for Innovation grant named Partnership of Peoples that was awarded to the Museum of Anthropology in 2007. This project is often simply referred to by museum staff as 'the renewal'. David Cunningham was the lead project designer. His records include the architectural drawings from Stantec and Laboratorio Museotecnico Goppion, research and planning on furniture, lighting, locks, and security. In addition are photographs taken of all stages of the project.

Central Coast Salish Art Inventory

Series consists of slides representing the inventory of Central Coast Salish art photographed by Dr. Kew during his visits to various North American museums and the British Museum in preparation for the exhibition Visions of Power Symbols of Wealth: Central Coast Salish Sculpture and Engraving. The images illustrate a wide variety of traditional art objects including masks, adzes, spindle whorls, mat creasers, and totems poles, as well as various jewelry, instruments, and utensils. The series also includes two volumes of the Central Coast Salish Computerized Art Inventory, which provides a detailed physical description of each art object.
