Anthony Island slides

File consists of photographs taken at Anthony Island, Haida Gwaii, on a 1957 trip. The majority of the images appear to be at the Ninstints village site on Anthony Island.

An accrual of 20 slides was added to this file in March 2022, from accession 2022-3. Most appear to be duplicates of slides already in the file. These 20 slides have not been digitized.

HBH Anthony Is. 1957 [slides]

File consists of photographs taken during a 1957 trip to Anthony Island, part of Haida Gwaii, to survey and/or acquire and preserve totem poles from the island. This expedition was undertaken as part of the B.C. Totem Pole Preservation Committee. This committee was set up in 1953 by members of MOA, UBC's Department of Anthropology, and the BC Provincial Museum, with support from the lumber and fishing industries. Their aim was to survey existing poles of the province, and to acquire and preserve all those not in use. H.R. MacMillan and W.C. Koerner supported the purchase and transportation of the poles which were brought to Vancouver and Victoria from coastal villages.

Members of the 1957 expedition included Wilson Duff, Michael Kew, Harry Hawthorn, John Smyly, and Bill Reid.

Beaver pole, Anthony Island

Image of a section of a totem pole, featuring a beaver, on Anthony Island, Haida Gwaii. This appears to be a pole now housed at the Museum of Anthropology (museum item #A50013). This museum item has the following description: "Base section of a wooden totem pole, crescent shaped in cross section and carved in shallow and deep relief. Depicted is a seated beaver with one potlatch ring between erect ears; protruding upper incisors; raised forepaws and hind paws grasping chewing sticks. Below its rectangular shaped crosshatched tail is a human face with large circular eyes. Traces of blue in eye sockets and around nostrils... Beaver was one of crests owned by the lineage of Chief Ninstints (Tom Price), 'Those Born Up the Inlet', of the Eagle moiety... Remainder of pole, except top figure, burned when the village was burned in 1892 by the Koskimo and the crew of a sealing schooner. ."
