Northwest Coast artists series

Series consists of photographs documenting Northwest Coast artists and their work throughout the 1970s and 1980s

Jensen first began to photograph works of art for Bud Mintz around 1973 when he was working for Langara College.  Before he opened his gallery she would go to the College to photograph the jewellery and art he had for sale.  Often the pieces had been purchased and he wanted to document what he had sold.  Once he opened his gallery of Aboriginal art in South Vancouver, Jensen would go to the gallery to take pictures.

Through her work with Bud Mintz Jensen met many Northwest coast artists, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal. As she developed relationships with many of these artists, she documented them and their work.

Some of the later photographs of artists were taken to accompany articles and other work that Jensen was doing at the time.

Northwest Coast groups

Series consists of photographs documenting events in various communities throughout British Columbia and Washington State. These include community photographs in Mt. Currie; the Salish Linguistic Conference in Oman, Washington State; a Robert Davidson Pole Raising; coverage of NWC artifacts at the National Museum of Copenhagen in Denmark; coverage of 1992 Nuxalk Potlatch at Bella Coola for Canadian Museum of Civilization; and photographs of a Haida bentwood box

Between working on language and education projects, Jensen was often hired by communities to document important events, such as pole-raisings, conferences and potlatches.  This series consists of the photographs taken at those events.

University of British Columbia (UBC) series

Series consists of photographs documenting totem pole raising or restoration and other events held at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Museum of Anthropology (MOA).

In 1976 Jensen was hired by MOA to document the installation of totem poles into the new building.  Jensen did not keep the negatives for these photographs (MOA did in this instance).  She was hired again in 1981 to create a slide loop of images to be featured in the museum.  After working with the museum, she felt welcome there and often gave talks or did training.  Most of the subsequent photographs in this series were taken at public events such as book launches or pole raisings.

Minute book

Series consists of one bound minute book journal detailing Percy Broughton's day-to-day events, including his travels, ailments, visitors, sermons and observations.

Photo album

Series consists of one bound photo album with pages arranged generally according to subject matter. Places and subjects represented within the material include Wycliffe College, ships and their crews, Arctic bears and wildlife, Hudson Bay and Inuit community members and activities at Lake Harbour in Nunavut, Canada.

Museum of Anthropology events

Series consists of correspondence, memoranda, newsletters, pamphlets and
newspaper clippings of events that Dr. Halpin either organized, or assisted, while working at the Museum of Anthropology. Records relate to the opening of the museum in 1976 and to various visiting scholars who gave lectures or organized activities between 1975-1986. Also included are records relating to two events which took place at the Museum of Anthropology: the Norman Tait Barbecue, an open public event for all to attend; and Inuit Art Round Table, during which issues related to Inuit art were discussed by a panel of curators and First Nations people.

Site visit notes

Series consists of notes Duff took while visiting First Nations communities. The materials consist of handwritten notes by Duff concerning totem poles, carvers, language and social organization of the communities. There are also some notes of conversations with community members or stories recounted by them.

General research

Series consists of records created and collected by McLennan in the course of research on Northwest coast art. McLennan kept files related to research conducted in other museums and archives, on artists he came into contact with, and a series of photographs depicting art styles and objects complied and organized by culture, and ideas and research for books. Each of these comprises its own sub-series.

Facilities and Services Files

Series consists of correspondence and memoranda, reports, minutes, blueline prints, architectural plans, handwritten notations, journal articles, newspaper clippings, brochures, photographs and other textual and graphic material relating to Museum of Anthropology facilities and services. The series includes records regarding the museum’s construction plans and projects, including: the initial planning and building of the museum and several of its expansions and renovations. Also included are records relating to building maintenance; this includes records relating to building security and museum grounds.

The series is divided into the following subseries:

General Administration

This series consists of records created, received, and/or used by individuals, groups or committees responsible for public programming and education function of the Museum.
Contains records related to public programming and education policy development, finances, planning, as well as other administrative activities.
Records in this series include correspondence, memoranda, drafts, query/suggestion forms, meeting minutes, grants, acquisition proposal report, reports, guidelines, policy proposals, and handwritten notes.

Photographs

Series consists of photographs, negative and slides documenting activities of the Museum of Anthropology. Most activities took place at the museum, but some took place elsewhere. The activities documented include exhibit openings, exhibit preparation, celebrations, artists working, presentations, conferences, workshops, and notable guests.
Slides in subseries 1-5 are stored in five binders, arranged chronologically. Photographs, negatives and slides in subseries 6-8 are stored in boxes, arranged according to the events they depict. Slides in subseries 9 are stored in a box, arranged topically.

Collections Files

Series consists of correspondence and memoranda, minutes, reports, collections lists, draft copies, handwritten notations, journal articles, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, slides, and other textual records related to the Museum of Anthropology’s collections. Includes records related to the acquisition of new collection pieces, including records related to the museum’s Acquisitions Committee and the donation of particular items and collections to the museum. Also included are records related to the de-accessioning and repatriation of museum collection items. The series also includes records related to the preservation, conservation, and storage of collections, and records related to the museum’s collections in general.

Northwest Coast research

Series consists of materials Duff created and gathered on various Northwest Coast tribes including Haida, Tlingit, Tsimshian and Kwakiutl. The documents include handwritten notes, typed articles, correspondence and reference materials such as photographs from other museums, Photostats and reprints and originals of articles.

Published and unpublished papers and reviews

Series consists of published and unpublished papers, book reviews, prefaces and poems written by Dr. Halpin while she was the curator of Ethnology at the Museum of Anthropology. Included is Dr. Halpin’s paper on “Visible Storage”, a preface to Potlatch by Joe David, and an article on “Museums in Literature”.

Bill Reid

Series consists of records created and collected by McLennan relating to Bill Reid and his art held both in private collections and at the MOA. Projects included in these records are the installation of Raven and the First Men in the MOA and The Spirit of Haida Gwaii at the Vancouver International Airport. Photographs also document jewelry designed by Bill Reid, along with small sculptures, large scale sculptures, ivory and argillite works and drums

Administration, public relations and correspondence

Series consists of records relating to McLennan’s administrative role as a curator at the MOA, including public relations (interviews given, lectures given, publications about the museum and his work), annual reports and correspondence (inquiries from interested parties regarding certain artifacts, events, people and donations at the museum). The majority of this series presents itself in textual records, however there are also digital records included as well. There are a large number of digital images in the file ‘Photographs’ which depict various stages in the museum development of MOA, significant artists, MOA grounds and landscape, special events and visitors and milestone occasions.
