Fonds consists of a diary. It appears the diary was written by Josephine Gladstone between 1888 and 1895. The content of the diary includes: Bible references, notes on events, money annotations, stories, songs, personal annotations, and transcription of correspondence written/received by Josephine and her relatives. The correspondence includes several letters to and from missionary G. Hopkins.

The fonds consists of records relating to Rosa Ho’s functions as a Curator of Art and Public Programmes at the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. Records include correspondence, memoranda, handwritten notes, minutes, object lists, reports, brochures, press releases, newspaper clippings, interview transcripts and tapes, financial statements, grant applications, publication drafts, policy information, mission statements, and other materials. The records are predominantly from 1988 to 1999, while Rosa was the Curator of Art and Public Programmes. The records largely pertain to events, programming, and exhibitions held at the Museum of Anthropology. Also included in the fonds are records relating to external projects and publications.

Rosa Ho

Hindaleah (Hindy) Ratner fonds

The fonds consists of records created by Ratner in the process of conceptualizing, developing and running public programming and extension services at the Museum of Anthropology. Initially, the duties of the Extension Curator were coordinating the development of in-house exhibits, non-credit educational programming, extension activities and publicity. Programming included performances, workshops, lectures, non-credit courses, museum tours, identification clinics and audio-visual presentations, often in conjunction with the Center for Continuing Education. Ratner organized local and international cultural excursions, including acting as a tour escort. Ratner was responsible for coordinating special events and lectures in conjunction with exhibits, and from 1980 was responsible for administering travelling exhibitions. Other extension activities included print exhibits in Vancouver office spaces, installations in off-campus locations such as the Vancouver Airport, and the Special Prison Extension Project.

Communications duties included production of the calendar of events and publicity circulars. Other duties included preparation of grant applications, managing staff, including student interns, budgeting, preparing reports, and assisting film and video production use of museum space and collections.
Public relations activities included establishing contacts with media representatives, promoting exhibits and other special events, producing news releases, distributing calendars of events and brochures, arranging staff interviews with media and soliciting publicity.

The fonds consists of records Telfer created or received during the time that she spent as a teacher at residential schools. The materials donated by Telfer include correspondence, essays, schedules, programmes, ephemera notes and a significant number of photographs. These records are primarily related to the the Morley Residential School, the Coqualeetza Residential School and the Port Alberni Residential School, as well as the Nakoda (Stoney) Nation.

Fonds consists of material related to the art, research, and writing of Hilary Stewart. The bulk of the material is related to the production of her books on the culture and art of the First Nations peoples of the Pacific Northwest. The remaining material relates to illustrations that she did for publications by other authors, a small amount of material done for personal use, and collected research and ephemera that does not appear to be related to one specific publication. Material includes original illustrations, collected research and notes, book drafts and pre-press materials, photographs, correspondence, and collected memorabilia.

The fonds consists of 66 photographic prints, some of which are hand-coloured, stamped “B.W. Leeson Quatsino, B.C.”, labelled on the front or back with explanatory information, or signed in ink. One print of a longhouse is stamped “The Leeson Collection Copyright 1914.” The photographic subject matter relates to British Columbia’s Kwakwaka'wakw First Nations and the British Columbia landscape. Also included is a copy of Portraits of the Indians of Quatsino by Benjamin W. Leeson (Kit #20) by Susan Roper, produced by the Research Project on Early B.C. Photography at the Vancouver Public Library around 1972, and 23 duplicate slides which accompany it.

Fonds consists of four photographs, and correspondence between Evelyn Goddard and the Museum of Anthropology regarding the donation of the images. The photographs include two snapshots taken by Goddard of indigenous graves at Hagwilget, BC, a photograph showing scenes around Hazelton, BC, and a postcard featuring the image of a totem pole at Kitseguecla, BC.

Ronnie Tessler fonds

The fonds consists of photographs created by Ronnie Tessler between 1986 and 1987 documenting a canoe project by Nisga’a carver Norman Tait. The project was abandoned in the summer of 1987, and the canoe was left uncompleted. The photographs depict models for the canoe, transportation of the log for the canoe to the Museum of Anthropology, ceremonies performed throughout the project, and various stages of work on the canoe and model. Additional photographs from this period depict a totem pole-raising ceremony at Capilano Mall in North Vancouver, as well as portraits of Les Baker, a model Tait wanted to use for a “white man” mask. The fonds is arranged into a single series: Norman Tait canoe project and related materials.

Eric Parker fonds

The fonds consists primarily of material accumulated and/or created by Lt. Col. Parker during the period of his military duties in Tibet and time spent there after his release from the military (1921-1924). This material includes textual records such as correspondence relating to military matters with Sir Charles Bell, and those written to, and received from, Tibetan officers and the 13th Dalai Lama. A few letters written in Tibetan have been recently translated into English and are included in the fonds. Other textual materials includes handwritten speech and other notes, published documents such as an Almanac (written in Tibetan), newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous items such as philatelic materials and handwritten children's rhymes and songs.

The fonds also contains a collection of black and white photographs and negatives, the majority of which were images taken by Lt. Col. Parker, while others, predate Parker’s time in Tibet. The photographs are housed in two albums (Photograph Collections A and B), and show Tibet primarily in the 1920s. The images depict military and domestic scenes in Tibet including photographs of individuals from all social strata, as well as local architecture and landscapes. Some of the places (e.g., monasteries) no longer exist. The albums also contain more recent colour prints of the many Tibetan objects acquired by the Parkers (and now housed in the Ethnology Collection at the Museum of Anthropology). Some duplicates occur within and between albums. The negatives correspond to prints in one album (Photograph Collection A). Only a small number of negatives have not been printed.

These series are further divided into various subseries. The records include, but are not limited to, correspondence between Audrey Hawthorn and a variety of donors, scholars, and other parties associated with the museum; materials documenting collections acquisitions and loans; and records relating to visible storage, and the planning and development of the new museum building. There is extensive documentation concerning the acquisition, development and maintenance of the museum collections. The fonds also includes records of Harry Hawthorn, who formally held the position of Director of the museum, during much of his wife’s tenure as Curator, though often it was Audrey Hawthorn who took on the responsibilities of the directorship. Records in this fonds take the form of correspondence, memoranda, ephemera, newspaper clippings, photographs, sketches, plans slides financial documents, schedules, notes, and forms.

Inge Ruus fonds

The records in this fonds consist of material created and received by Ruus both in her voluntary capacity and as a curatorial assistant. The majority of the records in the fonds pertain to the 1976 Guatemalan Highlands exhibit. Other records in the fonds are largely composed of photographic documentation of the clothing and textiles of various cultures. Other materials in the fonds relate to the management of the museum’s collection, with a particular focus on research into visible storage. Records in this fonds are composed of slides, photographs, notes, memoranda, and correspondence.

Fonds consists of five glass plate negatives taken in the early 1930s by James B. W. Cater when he worked for a farming company on Rapa Nui (Easter Island), a Chilean island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, at the southeasternmost point of the Polynesian Triangle.

Glass plate negatives feature: a young girl posed in front of a moai, the monolithic human figures carved by the Rapa Nui people; a portrait of a young girl; group portraits taken outdoors.

Beverley Brown fonds

The fonds consists of 478 photographs, predominantly of students at the St. Michael’s Residential School in Alert Bay. Beverley Brown and her friends took the photographs between ca. 1937 and ca. 1945 using Brown’s camera. Photographs from this period include shots of the students with their friends and of social events, as well as posed class photographs. These class photographs were taken by school supervisors who subsequently sold the prints to other students. Other photographs were taken in Brown’s hometown, Bella Bella, and in the area of the Namu cannery. These show weddings, fishing boats, landscapes, and buildings. Peter Mason Sr., Brown’s father, had the photographs developed in Vancouver.
