Public Programmes and Events Files

Series consists of correspondence and memoranda, reports, brochures, pamphlets, handwritten notations, invitations, programmes, photographs, slides, newspaper clippings, advertisements, and other textual and graphic records related to public programmes and events produced by the Museum of Anthropology. The series includes records relating to specific programmes, the planning of programmes, museum film and video productions and their viewing, as well as records regarding special events and performances held at the museum. Also includes planning records relating to the museum’s involvement with Expo’86.

School Programmes Files

Series consists of correspondence and memoranda, brochures, journal articles, papers, reports, draft copies, grant applications, handwritten notations, and other textual records regarding Museum of Anthropology school programmes. In addition to records regarding specific school programmes, the series includes records relating to the planning of school programmes, the production of workshops, kits, informative brochures for teachers and participant responses.

Teaching/Training and Research Files

Series consists of published and unpublished articles and papers, draft copies, correspondence and memoranda, minutes, handwritten notations, curriculum vitae, pamphlets, brochures, speech outlines, photographs, and other textual and graphic material related to the director’s teaching, training, and research activities, as well as those of other Museum of Anthropology staff members. Includes records related to the teaching and planning of University of British Columbia credit courses, such as the Museum Studies Certificate program, taught at the museum, as well as records regarding special volunteer training and internship programs at the museum. The series also includes files regarding research and publications by the directors, other Museum of Anthropology staff and individuals not employed by the museum. In addition, the series includes records relating to talks given by the Director of the Museum, as well as a few files related to Michael Ames’ retirement and nominations for various awards.

External Relations Files

Series consists of correspondence and memoranda, handwritten notations, reports, newspaper clippings, journal articles, pamphlets, minutes, financial statements, papers, membership lists, photographs and other textual and graphic material related to the Museum of Anthropology’s relations with individuals, organizations, and associations external to the museum. Series includes records related to museum membership vis-à-vis the short-lived Friends of the Museum of Anthropology, the museum’s public relations activities, and events held by external organizations or groups at the museum, such as APEC, inquiries and requests received by the museum, including requests for guided visits, as well as records regarding the collection of visitor comments. In addition to Ames’ general communications and correspondence, the series also includes records relating to the Museum of Anthropology’s relations with other museums and institutions. This includes correspondence and other records regarding the director’s participation in a number of external museum-related committees and associations.

Series consists of correspondence, interdepartmental memoranda, loan requests and commissions, exhibit receipts, exhibit proposals and forms including blank forms, policy drafts, news releases, pamphlets, minutes of committee meetings, budgets, agendas, exhibition and gallery schedules, exhibition lists, facility reports, expense claims, installation invoice, handwritten notations, photographs, and slides. These records relate to the administrative duties carried out by Carol Mayer either in relation to exhibitions or other miscellaneous events such as courses taught at Emily Carr College of Art and Design, conference planning and participation on a provincial Task Force on Museum and First Nations.

Series consists of records relating to museum exhibits that were In House (MOA based exhibit displayed at MOA), Traveling In (exhibits from outside institutions), and/or Traveling Out (a MOA based exhibit that travels for exhibition outside of MOA). Student Project files

Series consists of records relating to display units and museum exhibits that were done by students of Anthropology 431 and Anthropology 432 (course titles included Museum Practice and Curatorship, Anthropology of Public Presentation, and Museum Studies and Principles). The records are group assignments that include journals, correspondence, permissions for use, exhibit receipts, exhibit proposals, agreement forms, interview transcripts, research notes, design sketches, invitations, colour samples, samples of mounting materials, colour printouts, negatives, slides and photographs.

Personal Records

Series consists of records (primarily photographic slides) documenting Minn Sjolseth's travels with her husband Anthony Carter to visit events and communities at locations including Haida Gwaii, Ketchikan, Kitwancool, Kingcome Inlet, Kispiox, Gitsegukla, Kitwanga and Skidegate among others. The contents of the series reflect First Nations cultures in British Columbia throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including Haida, Nuu-Chah-Nulth, Skwxwú7mesh, Nisga'a, Kwakwaka'wakw. The photographs document potlatches, totem poles, villages, landscapes, as well as portraits of individuals. The series also contains files with a small number of photographs documenting Sjolseth's paintings on these subjects, as well as Sjolseth at work on her art on location in these communities and locations.

Artwork and Exhibition Records

Series consists of records documenting Minn Sjolseth’s practice as a painter and printmaker from the 1960s to the 1990s. Records include photographic documentation of Sjolseth’s paintings, other artwork, and exhibitions; newspaper clippings and other ephemera related to her artistic career; invitations, press releases, and one sheets from several of her exhibitions; textual records relating to her artworks and artistic career (including price lists, appraisal documents, and artist files from institutions); biographical and memorial pamphlets about Sjolseth; a scrapbook containing photographs and ephemera related to her art practice and personal life; and a sketchbook containing drawings and ephemera.

Artworks

Series consists of artworks created by Minn Sjolseth from the 1970s to the 1980s. These artworks include intaglio prints, pen and ink drawings, charcoal drawings, and watercolour paintings. Several of the artworks are landscapes, however the majority are portraits of First Nations individuals, including several portraits of Chief Dan George.

Series consists of images found in or related to Carter's 1966 published work. Focus is on photographic representations of First Nations communities along B.C.'s North coast, including the Xwemelch'stn (Coast Salish), Kynoc, Kitisug, Klemtu and Tsleil-Waututh nations. Personal records

Series consists of records related to Carter’s family life and travels with Minn Sjolseth, general research, self-published writing projects, and the posthumous management of his estate by Alan and Laila Campbell. Records include photographs taken by Carter, research photographs and articles, drafts by Carter and Alan Campbell, self-published materials, notes and poetry, correspondence, various certificates and licenses, and scrapbooks. The series also includes files that contain personal photographs mixed with photographs from publications documented in other series in this fonds.
