The fonds consists of records created by Marjorie Halpin as Curator of Ethnology at the Museum of Anthropology with some records relating to her activities as professor of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. The records include correspondence, reports, memos, handwritten notes, newspaper clippings, published and unpublished papers, grant application forms, loan permission forms, financial statements, course outlines and bibliographies, curator’s meeting papers, photographs, negatives and slides.

Exhibition files

Series consists of records related to the administration and realization of exhibits that Halpin organized at the Museum of Anthropology. Records include correspondence, memoranda, handwritten notes, draft copies, proposals, brochures, newspaper clippings, newsletters, loan forms, photocopies of photos and articles, photographs, negatives, contact prints, travel insurance slips, grant applications, reports, and budgets. Many of the files include research conducted on specific artists featured in various exhibitions as well as pictures of their works of art, gallery plans, rough drafts of labels, and bibliographies compiled for research purposes.

Proposals

Sub-series consists of textual records accumulated during research and proposals for exhibits by Dr. Halpin and students. Records include NWC Mechanical Masks and Puppetry, Great Canoes: The Photographs of David Neel, and J. Shadbolt and Northwest Coast Indian Art. Research files include planning and grant applications for the Diesing exhibit and West Coast Screens.

Research

Sub-series consists of textual records including research done by Dr. Halpin on various First Nations artisans some of whom are (later) featured in exhibitions. Records include biographies, correspondence, newspaper clippings, magazine articles and exhibit brochures on Bill Reid, Laura Wee Lay Laq, Roy Vickers, and Art Thompson.

Captain Cook Exhibit

Sub-series consists of textual records related to the exhibit on the voyages of Captain Cook to Nootka Sound. Included is the paper “Encounter 1778: Drawings and Watercolours of Nootka Sound by John Webber” by Natalie MacFarlane, exhibit scripts, video scripts, correspondence, and loan forms for the Webber drawings.
