House frontal totem pole, Anthony Island

Image of an old house post on Anthony Island, Haida Gwaii. This appears to the same as a post now housed at the Museum of Anthropology. This museum item is decribed as follows: "The lower section of a totem, crescent shaped in cross section, carved in shallow and deep relief. From top to bottom: bear with protruding tongue and raven on body, kneeling on head of unknown creature... Figures probably from historical narratives owned by lineages of house owner and wife. Grizzly bear was a crest of the lineages of the 'Striped Town People' and 'Sand Town People' of the Raven Moiety, to one of which the husband may have belonged. The supernatural Snag was also a crest of the 'Striped Town People'. Human arms of the raven or cormorant may indicate ability to transform from animal to human."

Student research materials

Subseries consists of research material created by Sawyer, as well as his students, regarding Northwest coast artifacts. The majority of this research pertains to a specific type of artifact known as the “Jenna Cass” mask. This portrait mask was created by the Haida First Nations, and is known for its colouring and pronounced lebret piercing. Textual materials in this subseries include reports, iconic analysis, handwritten notes, memos, correspondence, and photocopies of articles related to Jenna Cass and other artifacts research. Graphic materials include photographs, slides, film negatives, and drawings of Jenna Cass masks. Other materials not related to the Jenna Cass research include photocopies of published articles related to Northwest coast artifacts.

Alan R. Sawyer fonds

The fonds consists of records created and/or accumulated by Sawyer, predominately during his time as a professor and as a researcher at the University of British Columbia. Presently, there are two series in this fonds reflecting Sawyer’s research on the artifacts of Northwest Coast First Nation communities, including the: Tlingit; Haida; Tsimshian; Gitxsan; Nisga’a; Kwakwaka’wakw (formerly Kwakiutl); Nuxalk; Nuu-chah-nulth (formerly Nootka); and Coast Salish First Nations. The series contains slides, scrapbooks, photographs, textual records, and ephemera.

Canoes

File contains a combination of historical and modern day images of canoes used by First Nation groups living on the Northwest Coast. The historical images contain images of village life and uses of the canoe in a historical context. The modern day images show canoes housed in various museums in Canada and the United States. The textual records contained in this file are photocopies of images of canoes, both from historical photographs and of modern day photographs.

Village People

File contains images of various First Nations Cultural groups from the Pacific Northwest. The images include negatives and slides of Northwest Coast villages, totem poles, longhouses, and First Nations peoples dressed in regalia.

Haida

File mainly contains historical images of Haida and Tlingit villages and totem poles located on the Northwest Coast of British Columbia and Alaska. There are also images of Haida and Tlingit peoples dressed in regalia. Other photos include images of Haida and Tlingit artifacts, such as bentwood boxes and carvings, housed in various museums around the world. There are also images of a modern day ceremony in front of some totem poles and long houses. The textual records include photocopies of images of totem poles and Haida and Tlingit villages.

Photos of canoes

File contains images of canoes from various Northwest Coast First Nations communities including Tsimshian, Haida, Nuxalk, Kwakwaka'wakw and Nuu-chah-nulth.

Pitt Rivers Museum

File contains photocopied images of Haida and Nuxalk masks housed at the Pitt Rivers Museum. Other textual records include information on featured Northwest Coast masks and correspondence between McLennan and the museum. The photographs contain images of masks and other Northwest Coast artifacts such as hats, combs, and carvings housed at Pitt Rivers Museum.

File contains images of the First Nation artists involved with the <i>Through My Eyes</i> exhibit. The images show them looking at objects in the Vancouver Museum's collection.
