Bill Reid symposium

Subseries contains three files consisting of records related to the Bill Reid symposium which was titled “The Legacy of Bill Reid: A Critical Enquiry”. The records comprise planning of the symposium, research done after the symposium on related topics, and McLennan’s presentation.

Books

Subseries contains mainly digital files with some accompanying textual records of records which mostly pertain to ideas that McLennan had for books he wanted to write. In some cases an actual book was created and published, and in other cases a book was printed (not published) to show perspective donors. Potential book subjects are listed as follows: argillite, Charles Edenshaw [file contains an assemblage of digital images that could be used in a publication], Edenshaw exhibit [file contains records related to the Edenshaw exhibit “Signed Without Signature”], Explorers [notes for the beginning of an idea for a book], Gisaxstala, MOA books [these books were made as talking pieces to show prospective sponsors of gallery space what could be done in the galleries, and what had not yet been done], Port Essington, Raven Rattle, Seeing, Thinking, Serenipitous Assembly, Site Specific, Weavers Workshop. Other subjects included in this subseries pertain to book ideas or contacts who would have been interested in sponsoring book including Elspeth McConnell and Michael Audain.

Cape Mudge

Subseries contains one file consisting of correspondence, draft manuscript pages, and photographs relating to the ‘Marie Mauze Project’. This project involved the Kwakiutl Museum (now named the Nuymbalees Cultural Centre) and pieces from their collection that had been returned to them after the ban on potlatches had been lifted. The project was designed in order to create a book, however, the book was never published.

Captain cook club

Subseries contains images of the unveiling of the club given to Captain Cook as well as research materials collected by McLennan on Captain Cook.

Changing tides

Subseries consists of images of artifacts and of the exhibit. Artifacts in this exhibit are part of the Laboratory of Archaeology (LOA) collection at UBC. For more information on the objects contact the LOA.

Chronicles of pride

Subseries consists of images taken in the great hall at the Museum of Anthropology showing an exhibit titled Chronicles of Pride. Patricia Richardson Logie participated as an artist showing her portrait of Blanche MacDonald.

CMC houses project

This subseries contains records relating to an exhibit built at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. McLennan was the project manager and design developer for this project. He oversaw the completion and installation of six west coast First Nation house designs: Coast Salish, Haida, Tsimshian, Bella Coola, Oweekeno, and Kwakwaka'wakw. The records include newspaper clippings, correspondence, photographs, and notes.

Commonwealth [conference installation]

Subseries consists of records related to the 1987 Commonwealth Conference which brought together heads of government, delegates and media from every commonwealth country in the world. The MOA contributed examples of Northwest Coast art to the conference.

Cowichan Indian knitting

Subseries consists of images used in the book Cowichan Indian Knitting and textual records relating to the production of the book. In addition are the images used in the exhibit which was shown in the Museum of Anthropology September 23 – November 9, 1986.
