West Coast exhibit

Sub-series consists of textual records for the West Coast art exhibit organized by Ron Hamilton and Marjorie Halpin. Records include Hamilton’s biography, exhibit correspondence, project proposal and exhibit planning. Also included is a transcript from a taped interview of Ron Hamilton by Karen Duffek in 1989.

Textile project

Sub-series consists of textual records related to an exhibit on visible storage space at the museum. Records include meeting minutes from the Textile Committee and reports by Michael Ames, Moya Robinson, Herb Watson, Audrey Shane, and the Royal Ontario Museum.

Grant applications

Sub-series consists of textual records including grant applications for specific projects by Halpin and for operational funds for the museum.

Totem poles

Sub-series consists of textual records including correspondence regarding and general research notes on totem poles, and specific research on the poles of Stanley Park and the artisans who worked on them. Records also include biographies on the artisans who carved the museum totem poles and correspondence and the agreement between the Museum of Anthropology and the Royal British Columbia Museum to remove totem poles from Kitwancool in 1958. Sub-series also contains slides of totem poles, three video tapes, one photograph and one cassette tape.

Films

Sub-series consists of textual records including descriptions and notes on the locations of films on native subjects. Film lists include items from the Museum of Anthropology, University of British Columbia Anthropology department, the Royal British Columbia Museum and the National Archives of Canada.

Squamish Long House

Sub-series consists of textual records from the Museum of Anthropology project supporting the construction of a long house in Seattle, Washington, by the Squamish native community. Includes correspondence, contract proposals, the proposed site plan, press releases, and newspaper articles.

First Nations and multimedia

Sub-series consists of textual records from the project coordinated by Dr. Halpin after numerous requests from first nations communities for training in multimedia technology. Includes correspondence, a draft copy of the project proposal, and the application form for Arts Apprentice funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage.

Labels

Sub-series consists of textual records related to the creation of labels for various objects on exhibit in the Museum of Anthropology. Included are correspondence, memos, research, background notes, and schematic floor plans for the placement of labels for the Great Hall and objects on the ramp at the museum.

West Coast Photographs project

Sub-series consists of textual records and graphic images related to a project by Halpin and Ron Hamilton that attempted to document the lineage of a native community through photographs. Included are correspondence requesting the use of photographs, grant application forms, and photocopies of potential photographs for the project.

Museology Notes

Sub-series consists of textual records including Dr. Halpin’s personal notes on a proposal put forward to expand the department curriculum to offer a museology program.
