Trip to Village Island and Tzatsisnukomi (New Vancouver) photographs 2005

Consists of photographs documenting Jensen and Powell’s trip to Village Island and New Vancouver in 2005. People included are: Bill Holm, Marty Holm, Bill Cranmer, Emma Tamilin, William “Wah” Wasden Jr., Jay Stewart, Guy Buchholtzer, Dr Pat Shaw, Dr Marie Mauze, Bruce White, Jack Knox, Debra Brasser, Judy (surname unknown), and skipper Bill McKay.

Research

Consists of research materials referenced in the creation of the Gitxsan language and curriculum books. Includes works such as the Classified word list for B.C. Indian Languages by Larry Thompson and the Gitxsan Dictionary by Hindle and Rigsby.

Tsimshian-Gitxsan materials

Consists of Tsimshian language education materials produced by Margaret Seguin and Susan Marsden. The materials were used by Powell for research purposes during his work on the Gitxsan books.

Audio recordings

Consists of audio recordings created for various purposes. Many are recordings community members reading the language education materials created in both the Western and Eastern dialects. These recordings were intended to be used in conjunction with the books. Other recordings consist of interviews with community informants. Powell used the recorded interviews in preparation for the creation of language education materials. Finally, some of the recordings include community stories and songs that were considered and sometimes used in the language materials.

Eastern Gitxsan photographs

Consists of photographs in the form of negatives, prints and slides from Jensen’s visit to the Gitxsan villages in 1975, and from Jensen and Powell’s work and life in the Eastern villages between 1977 – 1982. The images include photographs that were used to illustrate the language books being produced, and other photographs that documented the culture and way of living in these communities.

Western Gitxsan photographs

Consists of photographs, in the form of negatives, prints and slides, taken during the period that Jensen and Powell lived and worked in the Western Gitxsan villages. The images include photographs that were used to illustrate the language books being produced, and other photographs that documented the culture and way of living in these communities.

Gitxsan artist photographs

Consists of photographs in print and slide format documenting Gitxsan artists, both amateur and professional, that Jensen and Powell worked with or knew personally during their time living with the Gitxsan.

Project records phase 1

Consists of correspondence, grant applications, and records of Phase 1 of the Shuswap project. Phase 1 covered the original contract to work with the community at Alkali Lake.

Project records phase 2

Consists of correspondence, grant proposals and applications, and other records relating to Phase 2 of the Shuswap project. Phase 2 includes all the records pertaining to the project after it expanded to include the communities of Soda Creek, Dog Creek, Canim Lake and Sugar Cane.

Research

Consists of research materials on the Shuswap language and culture, mostly work done by Aert Kuipers, a Dutch linguist who documented a number of British Columbian languages in the mid-twentieth century.

Original manuscripts publications

Consists of the original manuscripts of Let’s Study Shuswap: Book 1, Let’s Study Shuswap: Book 2, Learning Shuswap: Book 1, and Learning Shuswap: Book 2. Manuscripts include typed and handwritten sections, original illustrations, and photographs. Sub-series also includes Shuswap alphabet sheet.

Shuswap teacher training

Consists of materials produced for teaching training and development during Phase 2 of the Shuswap project. Includes a Teacher’s Manual developed with the assistance of Joy Wild, teaching units, Chilcotin readers by Maria Myers (produced during this period by Jensen) and a Chilcotin alphabet sheet.

Photographs and slides

Consists of photographs and slides created for use in the Let’s Study Shuswap books, as well as a number of images of Jensen, Powell, and their two young sons in the community.

Notebooks

Consists of copies of six notebooks kept by Powell during the first two years of his work with the Haisla speaking people. Notebooks contain notes taken during interviews in Kitamaat.

Reports

Consists of reports done by Powell for the Kitamaat Village Council on the traditional use and occupancy of land as it relates to a number of issues, such as specific resource areas and land under proposal for non-traditional uses.
