Festival Hong Kong Exhibits: Contrasts and Possessions

Subseries consists of records relating to two exhibits installed at MOA, in partnership with the Chinese Cultural Centre (CCC) and supported by a grant from the Festival Hong Kong 1992 Committee. "Contrasts: Hong Kong's New Territories in the Twentieth Century" is a photographic exhibit. It opened in Nov 1992, and continued in the lobby at MOA until May 23 1993. "Possessions from the Past" is an exhibit of Hakka artifacts. It opened in Nov 1992, and continued in the lobby at MOA until Mar 14 1993. Elizabeth Johnson was both curator and coordinator for these exhibits. They were also installed at the Chinese Cultural Centre. Subseries includes budgets, completed application form, CHIN printouts, contact lists, correspondence, draft exhibit proposal, final report, invitations, memos, name lists, notes, photographic negatives, receipts, and speaking notes.

Subseries relates to a proposed exhibition or portion of an exhibition which was to be called ‘Blue Thread an Installation by Gu Xiong’. The subseries includes correspondence, an exhibition catalogue of Gu Xiong’s work, a consent form, and newspaper photocopies.

Hakka Mountain songs and laments collection
Collection consists of six compact discs with recordings of Hakka Mountain songs and laments, sung by Mrs. Yau Chan Shek-ying in 1976, along with accompanying documentation. Documentation includes lists of recordings with song descriptions, song translations/transcriptions, a photograph and bio of the singer, and articles collected by Elizabeth Lominska Johnson. The songs were sung in an older dialect of Hakka. Song types include marriage laments, mountain songs, and funeral laments.
Hakka mountain, or Hakka hill songs, are rural songs sung in the Hakka language by the Hakka people of Southern China. The songs vary in theme/subject, and exist as a kind of oral literature and/or communication at a distance.

Hands of Our Ancestors: The Revival of Salish Weaving at Musqueam

Subseries consists of records relating to the exhibit, "Hands of Our Ancestors: The Revival of Salish Weaving at Musqueam," which was installed at MOA from January 28 to July 20, 1986. The exhibit was co-curated by Wendy Grant and Debra Sparrow of the Musqueam Weavers, and Elizabeth Johnson of MOA.
