Binder 3

Photographs and negatives

Sub-series consists of photographs and negatives of various artifacts, events and people. It is assumed that most were taken by Duff, although some are identified as acquired by others. Includes views of boxes and chests; plates, dishes and spoons; figures and groups; chiefs' seats and copper; frontlets, masks, rattles; housefronts and house posts; mortuaries; canes; canoes and paddles; panel pipes; Chilkat blanket and tunic; skin robe; slate objects; Raven Screen details; potlatch; picnic; and scenery.

1967-4 (slate pole, slate plate, comport, dish, can)

File consists of photographs and negatives of slate pole, comport, dish, and white stone or ivory cane; and negatives of slate plate. Artefacts pictured are presumed to be of Haida and/or Northwest Coast Indigenous design.

1967-6 (slate groups)

File consists of photographs and negatives of slate groups. Images include carved slate sculpture of figures and animals (bears). Artefacts pictured are presumed to be of Haida and/or Northwest Coast Indigenous design.

1968-D (boxes)

File consists of photographs and negatives of painted bentwood boxes; and negatives of boxes. Artefacts pictured are of Haida design.

1970-1 (NMC poles, figures and dishes)

File consists of views of artifacts in the National Museum of Canada. Includes photographs and negatives of poles, figures and dishes. Artefacts pictured are presumed to be of Haida and/or Northwest Coast Indigenous design.

Photos 1970

File consists of ms. and typed photo lists. Includes: lists of black and white photos, by negative number; general descriptive list of contents of slide cases 1-20, with a breakdown of specimen and exhibit slides; summary of the total number of slides for different artifacts, by type of object and number of slides; lists, by negative number, of photographed artifacts in the National Museum of Canada; lists of photographs taken in the American Museum of Natural History, United States National Museum, and Field Museum; lists and catalogue numbers of AMNH objects; information taken from loan agreement forms identifying objects by collection and catalogue number; and information for loan agreement forms. Artefacts pictured are of Haida design.

Slides

Slides of artifacts, places, events, exhibits, air views, and unknown First Nations people. Also included are slides relating to museum history which show images of sketches and models for the new Museum of Anthropology, construction views, totem pole raising, the museum opening in 1976, and museum staff. Most of the slides were taken by Duff, although some were acquired from others or purchased. Accompanying textual material includes a letter about artifacts, slide lists from boxes, lists related to the centennial totem pole program, and a text of legends.

Case 2 - The Art of the Raven (VAG) 2

File consists of slides taken at Vancouver Art Gallery from May-June 1967 and miscellaneous art slides. Includes: masks, daggers, Kwakiutl figures, designs, textiles, Raven Screen details, painted Duff box, drums, spindle whorls, rattles, spoons, Kwakiutl masks, work of Mungo Martin,work of H. Hunt, work of Bill Holm, work of Bill Reid, U.B.C. panel pipes, U.B.C. slate dish, chests, Haida dishes and comb. Note: Slides in section C-c are duplicates. Artefacts pictured are of Haida and Kwakiutl design.

Case 4 - Centennial poles

File consists of slides showing poles by a number of different carvers. Includes: Sam Henderson, Henry Hunt, Tony Hunt, C. Dudoward, S. Modeste, S. Charlie, J. John, J. James, S. Walkus, W. Jeffrey, Alert Bay carvers, U.B.C. Totem Park Haida poles, Victoria museum,carving tools, ferry shots. Note: Includes lists of argillite slides, centennial totem pole programme carvers and judges, and text of legends. Argillite slides have been added; these are duplicated in part in case 18.

Case 10 - 1970-2

File consists of slides including: United States National Museum specimens, exhibits at Milwaukee, Chicago, Philadelphia. Images include panel pipes, Bear Mother sculptures, carved plates, slate poles, model houses, masks, ladles and bowls. Artefacts pictured are presumed to be of Northwest Coast Indigenous design.

Case 11 - 1970-3

File consists of slides including: exhibits at Museum of Natural History, exhibits at Museum of History and Technology, July 1970, trip to Hazelton, Rupert, and other locations. Images include Kitwancool, Skeena and Kitwanga poles and Kispiox totems.
