Fonds consists of material related to the art, research, and writing of Hilary Stewart. The bulk of the material is related to the production of her books on the culture and art of the First Nations peoples of the Pacific Northwest. The remaining material relates to illustrations that she did for publications by other authors, a small amount of material done for personal use, and collected research and ephemera that does not appear to be related to one specific publication. Material includes original illustrations, collected research and notes, book drafts and pre-press materials, photographs, correspondence, and collected memorabilia.

The material has been arranged into three series:

Collected research and ephemera

Series consists of research material collected by Stewart that cannot be identified as being for one particular project, as well as miscellaneous memorabilia and ephemera. Although material in this series is not necessarily connected to a particular project, it is all related thematically to Stewart’s research interests in the art and culture of First Nations peoples of the Pacific Northwest.

These photographs were originally housed in a small box, filed by subjects. The photographs have been rehoused into archival sleeves, but the groupings and subject names have been retained.

Bill Reid

Consists of collected material about or by artist Bill Reid, with whom Hilary was acquainted. Includes clippings, reproductions of Reid's work, pamphlets, obituaries, correspondence, and a photograph.

North American Indian Technology

Series contains Stewart's first book, unpublished, from 1963. It is based on lectures at the University of British Columbia. Includes a note about the creation of the book that Stewart added in 2005.
