Scope and content
This file contains correspondence between Doug Sanders and Wilson Duff, as well as between Duff and the Humanities and Social Science Division of the Canada Council. Sanders, as legal advisor to the Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) working with the Land Claims Research Centre, sought Duff's support for a grant application to support research into Indigenous political organizations in the province. Duff's letter of support is included, making a case for the importance of the project and its contemporary relevance. A text titled "The Indian Land Claims Struggle in British Columbia: A Brief History", authored by Beth Van Dyke and Sanders, is also included.
The file also contains the October 1973 edition of the UBCIC monthly publication "Nesika: The Voice of BC Indians". The edition is a special issue on land claims, highlighting the work of the Nisga'a Nation to assert Aboriginal title, as well as commentaries and advice related to legal cases and negotiations elsewhere in the province. Other articles address concerns about how claims are settled, looking at examples from Alaska, and provide updates from the Yukon and Northwest Territories.
