Lynn Hill fonds

  • Fonds
  • 1998 - 2000

The fonds consists of the records created by Lynn Hill while she was employed as curator-in-residence at the Museum of Anthropology. They relate predominantly to her curation of the exhibition Raven’s Reprise. The exhibition involved the installation of works by contemporary Northwest Coast artists around the Museum, and was intended to challenge viewers’ expectations of Northwest Coast art by juxtaposing traditionally accepted aesthetics and technology with modern materials and urban sensibilities. Records reflect Hill’s planning of the exhibition, as well as her communication with artists involved in the exhibit and in a complimentary series of public talks. Other records relate to Hill’s work on Gallery 3 and with the Native Youth Program.

Documents include source books, correspondence, reports, training materials, budgets, grant applications, exhibit proposals, draft exhibition materials, resumes, brochures, photographs, interview transcripts, and copies of print materials.

Langmann Family Photograph collection

  • Collection
  • [186-?]-[191-?]

Collection consists of five albums of photos from Meiji period Japan including a few photos from Scotland, one album of photos from China, and two lacquer-framed photographs. It consists mostly of albumen hand-coloured Japanese photographs. These Japanese photographs belong to the genre known as souvenir photography or Yokohama photography. The subject of these photographs in this collection echoed those found in the Japanese ukiyo-e prints of the so-called “floating-world” of the late Edo Period, from around 1780 until the 1860s. The delicate hand colouring of the albumen silver prints is one of the characteristics of photographs of Japan from this period.

There were mainly two media to disseminate souvenir photos from Yokohama during Meiji period (1868 –1912): photo prints and lantern slides (see the James Davidson collection), but other materials were also used. These hand tinted photo prints were usually bound in albums with lacquer covers lavishly decorated in makie (蒔絵), a technique of applying adhesive metal such as gold and silver or colour powder in soft lacquer to create designs.

  • 1975 or 1976

In 1976, a group of students from the Kyuquot Elementary, a First Nations elementary school on the West coast of Vancouver Island, decided to make a filmstrip that documented their lives in the fishing village. The children’s intention behind making these photographs was to raise money for a summer field trip to Victoria, Vancouver, and the Okanagan. As part of the fundraiser, the children made a visual map depicting their daily travel to school by boat and a hand-written order form for the film. Collection consists of documents created by the Kyuquot Elementary School and Mr. Moore, a former Assistant Professor of Anthropology in the 1970s. The collection consists of one correspondence letter written by Mr. Moore requesting a copy of their filmstrip, four pages of typewritten filmstrip descriptions, one handwritten map and flyer created by the Kyuquot Elementary School and one 70 frame color filmstrip that was digitized in 2017. [At the time of processing, it was unknown if the fundraiser was successful.]
