Arts of the Village

Display for the Museum of Anthropology. Uncertain relation to exhibits. Shows Indonesian shadow puppets, rod puppets, musical instruments, and other objects.

Artwork

File consists of photographs of a collection of two-dimensional artwork painted by Douglas Cranmer. The artwork includes paintings of the halibut creation myth, eagles in various forms (sea eagle in ovoid form, an eagle, eagle with bear), abstract artwork in black and white with red accents, D’zonoqua, a fish and a mink with clouds. There are also two photographs which show Douglas Cranmer with his artwork, one at a North Vancouver outdoor show of his work in 1964 and one of him in his shop at 2706 Granville Street in Vancouver in 1965.

Artwork and Exhibition Records

Series consists of records documenting Minn Sjolseth’s practice as a painter and printmaker from the 1960s to the 1990s. Records include photographic documentation of Sjolseth’s paintings, other artwork, and exhibitions; newspaper clippings and other ephemera related to her artistic career; invitations, press releases, and one sheets from several of her exhibitions; textual records relating to her artworks and artistic career (including price lists, appraisal documents, and artist files from institutions); biographical and memorial pamphlets about Sjolseth; a scrapbook containing photographs and ephemera related to her art practice and personal life; and a sketchbook containing drawings and ephemera.

Artworks

Series consists of artworks created by Minn Sjolseth from the 1970s to the 1980s. These artworks include intaglio prints, pen and ink drawings, charcoal drawings, and watercolour paintings. Several of the artworks are landscapes, however the majority are portraits of First Nations individuals, including several portraits of Chief Dan George.

Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation [APEC]

Subseries consists of records relating to Skooker Broome’s responsibilities as a Museum of Anthropology liaison and coordinator of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference held at the Museum. Records include a power point presentation of APEC, plans for APEC, correspondence, memoranda, agendas, and site enhancement proposals.

Asian cultural festival

File consists of photographs documenting the final stage of log preparation for the creation of the Native Education Centre pole by Norman Tait and crew. At the beginning of the file images depict the carvers making their finishing tools, including small single handed adzes and curved knives. This stage involves the carvers adding all the finishing details, such as teeth and eyelids, to the figures. It also includes the raising of the pole during a ceremony given by the Native Education Centre. The textual info is in WHERE THE PEOPLE GATHER or paperback TOTEM POLE CARVING. Photo shows preparations (canoe repair and making regalia) involved in Norman Tait and crew making a significant appearance at the first (and only) Asian Cultural Festival.
