Scope and content
This file contains correspondences from James B. Watson, with the Department of Anthropology at the University of Washington, including multiple publications and draft papers shared with Wilson Duff. These include an introduction given at the 1968 Northwest Anthropological Conference in Portland, Oregon as well as the conference schedule. The introduction and three additional texts in the file are focused on the matter of leadership in 'small societies', mostly focused on the Tairora community of Abiera, in Papua New Guinea, and a leader named Mátoto.
Texts authored by Watson theorize about the nature and allowance of Mátoto's despotic behaviour, as characterised by the author. A paper authored by Sylvia Gronewold attempts to draw comparisons between specific individuals from the Zulu, Caribou Inuit [Kivallirmiut] and Tairora peoples, and proposes that the authoritarian behaviours of some leaders in these communities arose as a result of European contact.
