Subseries consists of photographic slides taken by Sawyer of Northwest Coast artifacts housed in various museums around North America and Europe, or of artifacts located in First Nation villages on BC’s northwest coast and/or the Alaskan panhandle. Some of the artifacts include the following: masks; totem poles; hats and helmets; effigies and figures; headdresses and frontlets; fishing equipment; weavings and blankets; armor and weaponry; shaman regalia and wands; boxes; necklaces; combs; and various household items such as bowls. A majority of the slides contain additional information about the artifact depicted in it. This information may include the following: name of the artifact; the First Nations community from which the artifact originated from; the museum and/or location of the artifact; the dimensions of the artifact; and/or the date of the artifact’s creation.

Slides of artifacts, places, events, exhibits, air views, and unknown First Nations people. Also included are slides relating to museum history which show images of sketches and models for the new Museum of Anthropology, construction views, totem pole raising, the museum opening in 1976, and museum staff. Most of the slides were taken by Duff, although some were acquired from others or purchased. Accompanying textual material includes a letter about artifacts, slide lists from boxes, lists related to the centennial totem pole program, and a text of legends.
Subseries contains a significant number of digital images on CD-ROMs of scans of silver bracelets from MOA, as well as various other institutions including the Royal Ontario Museum and the Canadian Museum of Civilization, in order to facilitate study of these bracelets as a flat image. Bracelets were scanned and then added to a database. These scans contributed to the Signed Without Signature exhibit at MOA on works by Charles and Isabella Edenshaw. CD-ROM 7 also includes photographs of Arthur Erickson’s birthday party at MOA.
Subseries consists of records related to the <i>Signed Without Signature: Works by Charles and Isabella Edenshaw</i> exhibit curated by McLennan for MOA. In this exhibition, McLennan focused on showcasing Charles Edenshaw’s metalwork and painting, and Isabella Edenshaw’s basketry, to illustrate how each artist created a recognizable “signature” through art and not by physically signing their names, and how it evolved through their long careers. Records include research on the Edenshaws, exhibit photos, reviews, notes, correspondence, artifact loans, and files relating to individual museums and heritage institutions which hold Edenshaw artifacts.
Series consists of records relating to Elizabeth Johnson’s attendance at the British Columbia Museums Association (B.C.M.A.) Seminar and her inquiries to receive on loan the Shuswap travelling exhibit. Records contain phone messages, memoranda, Shuswap Declaration copy, Shuswap travelling display materials list, correspondence, B.C.M.A. Cultural Centres contact lists, and B.C.M.A. Seminar on Cultural Centres.
Consists of materials produced for teaching training and development during Phase 2 of the Shuswap project. Includes a Teacher’s Manual developed with the assistance of Joy Wild, teaching units, Chilcotin readers by Maria Myers (produced during this period by Jensen) and a Chilcotin alphabet sheet.
Sub-series consists of records related to the 1986 exhibition on the art of Jack Shadbolt and includes textual records, photographs, slides, and one lecture tape. The textual records include grants and contracts, correspondence requesting loans of specific artwork for the exhibit, records relating to exhibit planning and compilation of the exhibit catalogue, exhibit reviews, a copy of the exhibit comment book, and interviews with Shadbolt. Also included are photographs of exhibit pieces. The sub-series has been divided into three sub-sub-series:
Sub-series consists of textual records related to the exhibition “Sensibilities” that challenged the notations of segregated collections space according to culture. The basic premise of the exhibit was for the viewer to come up with their own interpretation as to the objects presented before them. Records include exhibit planning notes, exhibit floor plan drawings, correspondence, loan forms, and newspaper articles about the exhibit.
Subseries contains images of objects in the exhibit Sensibilities: Unsuspected Multicultural Harmonies which ran at the Museum of Anthropology from October 26 1982 – April 17, 1983.
Subseries consists of records compiled by Sawyer on various Northwest coast artifacts in a number of scrapbooks. Graphic materials include photographs and postcards depicting items such as weavings, masks, totem poles, villages, and other artifacts. Some of the photographs contain information about the artifact being depicted, such as the First Nation community that created the artifact, the date of the artifact’s creation, the museum and/or location that the artifact is located in, and/or the dimensions of the artifact. Textual materials include newspaper and magazine clippings, museum brochures, and drawings of artifacts.
Subseries contains copies of various published and unpublished essays related to Sawyer’s research on Northwest Coast artifacts, including essays written by Frederica de Laguna, Aldonia Jonaitis, Sylvia Albright, James Haggarty and Richard Inglis, Philip Drucker, Bill Holm and more. Other research materials include maps and newspaper clippings related to the Northwest Coast.
