From Under the Delta Exhibition

Subseries consists of records relating to the “From Under the Delta: Wet-Site Archaeology in the Lower Fraser Region of British Columbia” exhibit installed at the Museum of Anthropology from March 1995 to March 1999. In his capacity as Designer, Skooker Broome worked on the planning, designing, and installation of the exhibit. Records include memoranda, a copyrighted article by Kathryn Bernick, invoices, color photographs, negatives, color slides, contact sheet, exhibit plans, drafts of exhibit captions, photocopy of a newspaper article, correspondence, hand-written notes, budgets, funding application, object summaries, drawings, and publications.

Heredity: Heredity Chiefs of the Haida

Subseries consists of records relating to the exhibit “Heredity: Hereditary Chiefs of the Haida.” This photo-based exhibit was installed at the Museum of Anthropology from April 28, 1998 to February 21, 1999. Records include: drafts and final artist statement, artifact list, handwritten notes, photographic slides, pencil and ink diagrams, correspondence, memoranda, publications, announcements and press releases, exhibition description, agenda, release forms for photographs, exhibit budget, computer exhibit diagrams, and exhibit proposals.

MOA mobile application icon

Subseries consists of a draft icon design for a Museum of Anthropology mobile application. There is no information about the purpose of or plans for this application. As of 2016, the application has not been created.

Subseries consists of records involved in the action of borrowing objects for purposes other than exhibition from other people or organizations. The records in this subseries take the form of notes, agreement forms, correspondence and receipts.

Special events

Subseries consists of files relating to nine special events: the Indian Costume Show (1950), Open House Day (1955), the opening of Totem Park, the Henry Speck (Ozistalis) show (1964), a talk given on aboriginal medicine (1966), Bill Holm’s Indian Dance Group (1967), the opening ceremony for the new museum (1974-1979), the Raven Celebration (1980), the ‘Ksan Poleraising (1980-1981), and the dedication of the museum doors (1976). The records in this subseries consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, memoranda, photographic negatives, ephemera, plans, budgets, financial statements, receipts, a copy of the June 9, 1976 edition of UBC Reports, and a copy of Canadian Art Review VI/I/1979.

Budget

Subseries consists of 14 files relating to the museum’s budget and to budgets for the department of anthropology. The records within the subseries consist of correspondence, budgets, ledger sheets, memoranda, receipts, notes, requisition books, expense ledgers, receipts, account statements, and statements of purchases.

General

Subseries consists of material relating to miscellaneous subjects related to the physical environs of the museum, including a photograph of the UBC campus, various work orders, permits as well a records relating to security and preservation of the totems at Totem park. The records in this subseries consist of a photograph, work order forms, correspondence, and memoranda.

Building maintenance

Subseries consists of material relating to the upkeep of the buildings used by the museum. Records in this subseries consist of correspondence, memoranda, plans and financial documents.

General correspondence

Subseries consists correspondence and communication between Hawthorn and individuals who were not representatives of another museum. There are several General Correspondence files, divided by year, and these consist primarily of people requesting that Audrey Hawthorn identify and price various objects, to recommend where to purchase NWC material, to speak at functions, and of requests for bibliographies. This subseries differs from subseries 10-B in that although the files may contain inquiries and requests, they often contain other types of correspondence as well. Record forms include correspondence, press releases, and ephemera.

Conservation Records

Subseries consists of records related to conservation issues that Miriam Clavir created during her duties and activities as conservator. These include: correspondence, memoranda, photos, conservation reports (including priority reports), and notes related to her laboratory activities in the form of proposals and policy notes, suggested conservation supply stock for the MOA shop, as well as a student’s conservation course paper. Records relating to her conservation internship with the Public Archives of Canada (1982), and her collaborative participation with Virginia Salazar on the International Partnerships Among Museums (IPAM) report on museum conservation (1991-1992) are also included.

Teaching and Internship Records

Subseries consists of records related to courses taught by Clavir at the Museum of Anthropology, her training of conservation interns which was primarily funded through the Museum Assistance Programme (MAP), and to Clavir’s participation in the Aboriginal Cultural Stewardship Program. The subseries includes: course outlines, teaching notes, correspondence, memoranda, reports, application forms, cost summaries, funding contracts, a published discussion paper, and a program module.

Staff research, publications and productions

Subseries consists of material produced by museum staff, among them Wilson Duff, Harry and Audrey Hawthorn, Marjorie Halpin, and Gloria Cranmer Webster. There is extensive material on Audrey Hawthorn’s Art of the Kwakiutl Indians. Included in this subseries are ca. 2000 photographs which were collected for possible use in this book. Photographs are numbered A38-A17206 with many numbers missing throughout. The majority of photographs are of wooden masks, but they are also of bowls, bentwood boxes, paddles, rattles, totem poles, talking sticks, headdresses and frontlets, wooden figures and miniatures, whistles, spoons, silver bracelets, argillite carvings, button blankets, chilkat blankets, cedar head and neck rings, woodworking tools, stone tools, and fish hooks. Other record forms included in this subseries include correspondence, notes and published materials.

Kesu': The Art and Life of Doug Cranmer

The records in this sub-series relate to the development and implementation of the exhibition curated by Jennifer Kramer titled Kesu': The Art and Life of Doug Cranmer. Records in the sub-series also relate to the development and publication of Kesu': The Art and Life of Doug Cranmer, authored by Jennifer Kramer and published in 2012 by Douglas & McIntyre. The exhibition featured the artwork of Doug Cranmer (1927-2006), a leading practitioner of Northwest Coast Kwakwaka’wakw art. Kesu' took place at the Museum of Anthropology from March 17 to September 3, 2012, the Museum at Campbell River in Campbell River, BC from October 19, 2010 to February 17, 2013 and the U’mista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay, BC from May 11 to October 8, 2013. Kramer received the 2012 British Columbia Museums Association's Museums in Motion Award of Merit for the exhibition. The book designer Jessica Sullivan received the 2012 Alcuin Society's award for First Place in the pictorial category.

Files in the sub-series consist of exhibition and publication planning notes and related correspondence, research materials pertaining to the career and life of Doug Cranmer, interview transcripts, photographs, funding proposals, object loan agreement forms, photography permission agreements, interview release forms, contracts and financial records, marketing plans, book drafts, exhibit text and labels, promotional materials and printouts of digital photographs of art work.
