On the left is a mortuary pole raised for Skedans, head chief of Skedans village with Skedan's crests: a moon with a Thunderbird face at top, mountain goat, and grizzly bear at the base. Printed around the border of the image is the photographer information "PHOTOGRAPHED BY R. MAYNARD, VICTORIA, . . . B. C." Handwritten inscription on the border reads "Skidegate Indian house & poles Skidegate Q. Ch. Is." Printed on the verso is the photographer information with the inscription "R.
