Percy Broughton collection

Collection consists of one bound journal, reflecting Broughton's day-to-day activities and missionary work in Baffin Island between 1909 and 1915, and one photo album with images of Wycliffe College, ships and their crews, towns, Arctic wildlife, and many of the Inuit community at Lake Harbour [Kimmirut] in Nunavut, Canada.

Bob Kingsmill fonds

The fonds consists of correspondence, questionnaires, and photographs relating to Bob Kingsmill’s research for his book A Catalogue of British Columbia Potters (1978). In order to gather material for his book, Kingsmill created a questionnaire requesting information and photographs, which he sent to about 70 potters throughout British Columbia. The fonds consists mainly of the responses Kingsmill received, which include the completed questionnaires containing short biographical and artistic statements by each potter, together with black and white or colour photographs of the artists and their pottery.

Stanley E. Read fonds

Fonds consists of scans of two albums of photographs and one enlarged photograph captured by Stanley Read during two separate vacations through interior British Columbia with his wife, Ruth. Also included in the fonds is a scan of a journal which Stanley Read used to document the daily events of one of these trips, during which Stanley and Ruth travelled through Gitksan territory/Skeena Country. The photographs capture Gitksan totem poles, people, and wilderness encountered on their travels.

Hilary Stewart fonds

Fonds consists of material related to the art, research, and writing of Hilary Stewart. The bulk of the material is related to the production of her books on the culture and art of the First Nations peoples of the Pacific Northwest. The remaining material relates to illustrations that she did for publications by other authors, a small amount of material done for personal use, and collected research and ephemera that does not appear to be related to one specific publication. Material includes original illustrations, collected research and notes, book drafts and pre-press materials, photographs, correspondence, and collected memorabilia.

James Davidson collection

Collection consists of Japanese hand-coloured glass lantern slides collected by James Davidson in Formosa (present day Taiwan), and possibly also in Japan, between 1894 and 1902. Davidson used these slides for his lectures. All the photographs except 10 belong to the genre known as souvenir photography. The subject of these photographs in this collection echoed those found in the Japanese ukiyo-e prints of the so-called “floating-world” of the late Edo Period, from around 1780 until the 1860s. The delicate hand colouring of the albumen silver prints is one of the characteristics of photographs of Japan from this period.

Additionally, there are nine glass lantern slides showing images of the aftermath of the 1891 Mino–Owari earthquake in Japan. These are mostly copies of images published in the book "The Great Earthquake of Japan, 1891" by John Milne and W.K. Burton, and most of these photographs were taken by William Kinnimond Burton, a Scottish engineer and photographer who worked in Japan. A copy of "The Great Earthquake of Japan, 1891" is available in the MOA Library.

Langmann Family Photograph collection

Collection consists of five albums of photos from Meiji period Japan including a few photos from Scotland, one album of photos from China, and two lacquer-framed photographs. It consists mostly of albumen hand-coloured Japanese photographs. These Japanese photographs belong to the genre known as souvenir photography or Yokohama photography. The subject of these photographs in this collection echoed those found in the Japanese ukiyo-e prints of the so-called “floating-world” of the late Edo Period, from around 1780 until the 1860s. The delicate hand colouring of the albumen silver prints is one of the characteristics of photographs of Japan from this period.

There were mainly two media to disseminate souvenir photos from Yokohama during Meiji period (1868 –1912): photo prints and lantern slides (see the James Davidson collection), but other materials were also used. These hand tinted photo prints were usually bound in albums with lacquer covers lavishly decorated in makie (蒔絵), a technique of applying adhesive metal such as gold and silver or colour powder in soft lacquer to create designs.

The fonds consists of photographs documenting the welcome ceremony that occurred in February 1987 for the canoe project by Nisga’a carver Norman Tait. The Museum of Anthropology appears in the background of multiple pictures in which spectators can be seen gathered for the 1st cut ceremony of the canoe log. Norman The event included speeches as well as ceremonies and performances by Norman Tait and his close relatives. Joe David, Reva Robinson, and Bill Reid are among the other notable individuals that appear in these images.

The fonds consists of records Telfer created or received during the time that she spent as a teacher at residential schools. The materials donated by Telfer include correspondence, essays, schedules, programmes, ephemera notes and a significant number of photographs. These records are primarily related to the the Morley Residential School, the Coqualeetza Residential School and the Port Alberni Residential School, as well as the Nakoda (Stoney) Nation.

Paddling to Where I Stand collection

Collection illustrates the gathering of information and writing of the book “Paddling to Where I Stand : Agnes Alfred, Qwiqwasutinuxw Noblewoman.” Includes interviews to Agnes Alfred conducted by Martine J. Reid and Daisy Sewid-Smith between 1979 and 1985. Interviews are documented as audio and video recordings and their written transcriptions, and other materials gathered by Martine J. Reid and Daisy Sewid-Smith for the edition and publication of the book. Collection also contains the manuscripts and draft for the book; correspondence between Martine J. Reid, Daisy Sewid-Smith and other people; eulogies and funeral pamphlets; Agnes Alfred’s family information; historical notes; and miscellanea. Collection includes photographic materials with photographs included in the book and additional photographs gathered by Martine J. Reid and Daisy Sewid-Smith during their research, and portraits of Agnes Alfred’s parents.

The fonds consists of records generated and used by several creators that all support the functions of the MOA Shop at the University of British Columbia’s Museum of Anthropology. The fonds reflects the creators’ filing system and illustrates the MOA Shop’s activities of administration, purchasing, sales and retailing, product development and merchandising, wholesaling and distribution, vendor and artist relations, marketing, and event planning from its founding in 1977.
