Administration and Planning

Series consists of general administrative records for the Collections unit at MOA, as well as planning documents for specific MOA exhibits. Material includes correspondence, object lists, object condition reports, exhibit travel schedules, and other general collections and exhibit planning records. The series is divided into two subseries:
A. General Collections administration
B. Exhibitions.

APEC textual records

This series is comprised of official APEC results reports, handbooks, and ministerial joint statements; newspapers, news clippings, magazines, hand-written notes, stickers, postcards, and other materials. These materials were created, used, and saved during the APEC Leaders’ Meeting at the Museum of Anthropology in November 1997. Material generated from events such as campus and city protests that occurred because of APEC are also present in this collection. These materials include University of British Columbia (UBC) campus publications and Canadian and American newspapers and magazines; press releases from protest groups; materials on The 1997 People’s Summit on APEC, the Women’s Conference Against APEC, APEC-Alert, Democracy Street, Anti-APEC Summit, and other anti-APEC organisations; photocopies of pictures of graffiti at MOA; the Musqueam Speech that was cancelled by the Prime Minister’s Office; printouts of various web pages concerning APEC; and other materials.

Program Wide

Includes records produced by or related to the Program Wide stream of the Renewal Project (MRP). The purpose of this stream was to “provide overall program management for the MRP and its streams, and to capture the objectives and scope elements which, being common to all or most of the streams, would be more effectively managed in a consolidated manner.” The objectives of the Program Wide stream were:

• To ensure that the MRP aligns with and delivers on the strategic objectives of the Museum as outlined in the MRP objectives to the fullest extent possible
• To work with First Nations communities, other program collaborators, and MOA’s diverse communities to deliver the MRP in a manner that is in accordance with the guiding principles and vision of the Museum.
• To optimize the allocation of bother human and financial resources to maximize the overall effectiveness of the program.
• To implement information technology systems that integrate with each other, are sustainable, and support the mission of the Museum and the objectives of the renewal program.
• To ensure the Museum remains operational and functional throughout as much of the renewal program as possible.
• To ensure relevant funding agencies are satisfied with both the process and the outcomes of the MRP.

Jill Baird was the Program-Wide stream lead.

Material in the series includes early planning documents, budgets, committee and other meeting minutes, correspondence, records related to various sources of funding and staffing, communication with UBC and the University’s Board of Directors, records related to First Nations community consultations and partnerships, PR and communications documents, and records related to IT planning.

The series is divided into subseries based on the various functions of the Program Wide stream.

Teaching Records

Series consists of records documenting the initial development and progress of the two courses taught by Mrs. Hawthorn: Anthropology 331-Primitive Arts and Mythology; and Anthropology 431-Museum Philosophy and Methods (1963-1978). It includes bibliographies, course notes and assignments, bibliographies, correspondence, and photographic materials.

The series has been divided into the following subseries:
A. Anthropology 331 and Anthropology 431
B. Teaching Slides

UBC and anthropological research

Files in this series relate to the various roles Harry Hawthorn has fulfilled at the University of British Columbia as an anthropologist, a professor (and later head of the Anthropology department), and as the first Director of the Museum of Anthropology. This series consists of correspondence, slides, photographs, negatives and research notes.

The correspondence files primarily relate to the general administration of the Museum of Anthropology by Dr. Hawthorn, including correspondence related to the museum’s collections, potential acquisitions, museum funding, the official name of the museum and the establishment of a new site for the museum. Additionally, there is also correspondence regarding the proposed development of the Indian Historical-Cultural Village, correspondence with other museums, letters asking for Dr. Hawthorn’s expert advice regarding objects, and correspondence with Wilson Duff. Included is correspondence between H. Hawthorn and Bert Robson relating to Hawthorn’s trip in the northeastern region of B.C.

Slides, photographs, negatives and notes relate to the various research trips undertaken by Hawthorn in B.C. from the late 1940s to the late 1950s. Some slides document a totem pole salvage expedition on Anthony Island, B.C. in 1957. Some of these slides were used in the production of George MacDonald’s book, Ninstints: A World Heritage Site. Other slides document miscellaneous events relating to Museum of Anthropology exhibitions and research, as well as other events such as Sports Day on the grounds of the Alberni Residential School and the carving of a 20’ long 2’ wide canoe, which took place at a regatta on May 24, 1948. Series includes negatives of totem poles, stories collected from Mungo Martin and notes, mostly written in an indigenous language.

Photographs

The series consists of over 600 hundred black-and-white photographs and negatives that relate to Lt. Col. Parker and his wife’s time in Tibet (1921- 1924), and a collection of more recent colour photographs of Tibetan objects that were collected by the couple. The majority of the b&w photographs were taken by Lt. Col. Parker during his military period, as well as the year following his release. The images depict military scenes, festivals and events, individual and group portraits, as well as various landscapes and architecture. Significant among these photographs are images of: the photographer who accompanied famed British climber, George Mallory; the Dalai Lama’s personal escort; and the first Lhasa Apso dogs out of Tibet. A small number of images (e.g., those of the Dalai Lama in 1910-1911) predate Lt. Col. Parker’s time in Tibet and are believed to have been given to him by some unknown person(s). The original photographs were not labelled; however, valuable contextual information has been provided by Father Donald, whose descriptions and commentary accompany a large number of these images (see Item List).

The prints are located in two photograph albums identified as Photograph Collections A & B. Photograph Collection A contains 243 b&w photographs, all of which are considered to be original prints. Although duplicates of images occur, these simply represent copies developed on different paper. It was reported (by Father Donald) that the last 48 photographs in this album were found loose and spread throughout Lt. Col. Parker’s papers. A total of 189 prints in Photograph Collection A have acetate negatives. Collection B contains 170 b&w photographs, of which all are considered original prints. A total of 67 b&w prints in Photograph Collection B have acetate negatives. Collection B also contains 74 colour photographs of artefacts to which there are no negatives. Duplicates of 68 b&w prints exist between the Photograph Collections A & B.

The series also includes 210 b&w negatives which correspond in number and sequence to print images found in Photograph Collection A: 193 negatives have corresponding prints; 17 negatives have no prints associated with them. A small number of negatives are duplicated. There are no negatives for the colour prints.

Accompanying the series is one compact disc (CD No. 5) consisting of 243 scanned b&w prints and 104 scanned negatives. The scanned prints also correspond in number and sequence to print images found in Photograph Collection A. Ten of the scanned negatives have acetate negatives but no prints associated with them; one scanned negative has neither acetate negative nor print (see Item List).

Illustrations and other artwork

Series consists of illustrations and other artwork made by Stewart, either for personal purposes or to be used in publications authored by other people. In addition to the artwork, the series also includes research, photographs, and correspondence related to the production and publication of the works. The series divided into four sub-series:

A - Personal illustrations and artwork
B - Images: Stone (by Wilson Duff)
C – Wisdom of the Elders (by Ruth Kirk)
D – Antiquity (by Dale Cross)

Textiles and Costumes

Series consists of an updated and expanded version of Anne M. Lambert’s textile book entitled “Storage of Textiles and Costumes: Guidelines for Decision Making” that was originally published in 1983. Darren Morrison was going to do the design work but did not because the project was cancelled and the updated version was never published.

Sound recordings

Series is divided into two sub-series. Subseries A, Interviews, contains materials gathered by the Tahltan Native Studies Committee with information about the Tahltan culture. Subseries B, Class materials, contains recordings made by Karen J. Clark and some of her students as part of class activities or to be used in class

Collections files

Series consists of correspondence and memoranda, contracts, budgets, minutes from Collections Committee meetings, schedules, photographs, negatives and other textual records related to the organization and maintenance of the Museum’s collections. Includes files relating to acquisitions, cataloguing, policies, storage, interns, museum assistants and field collection.

This is Haida records

Series consists of images found in or related to Carter's 1969 published work. Focus is on photographic representations of First Nations communities and individuals throughout Haida Gwaii. Geographic locations include Anthony Island (Ninstins), Masset, Skedans, Skidegate, Tanu and Yan. Series also contains images related to the 1969 Masset pole raising ceremony in honor of Robert Davidson, Jr. Files are generally arranged chronologically according to subject matter and/or locality. Except where noted with square brackets, the titles for files and items in this series were taken from annotations on the original material.

Building

Includes records related to the Building Stream of the Renewal Project (MRP). The purpose of this stream was to expand and enhance the existing MOA built space, with the following specific objectives:
• To build a new research centre comprised of four Research Suite including laboratory spaces, individual and group work spaces, and office spaces.
• To construct new storage space, including visible and compacting storage, to house MOA’s and the Laboratory of Archaeology’s (LOA) collections
• To respect the building and its exterior as a significant architectural heritage site in the renovations plans
• To create spaces where community members may gather and attend to collection objects in ways that respect their cultural traditions
• To improve the Museum’s financial viability by expanding revenue generating facilities such as the retail store, and by making its building operations more efficient
• To create enhanced Visitor Services for Museum users, such welcoming and warm arrival spaces which ate self-orienting and which provide all needed amenities
• To create efficient and supportive work spaces for staff, students, researchers, and volunteers
• To provide a welcoming and comfortable environment for all researchers using MOA’s facilities
• To provide enhanced teaching support within the new facilities

Interviews and Event Recording

Series includes audio and video interviews with Agnes Alfred and other members of the Kwakwaka'wakw community. Series also includes translations of some of those interviews or sections by Daisy Sewid-Smith

Sakamoto printed exhibit material

Series consists of printed materials sent from Kojo Sakamoto to the Binnings related either to the Bishop’s own art, or that of his mentor, Tomioka Tessai. Printed material comes in the form of exhibit catalogues, brochures, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings. A collection of encapsulated photographs from an undated calligraphy exhibit is also found in this series.

Photographic Materials

Series contains graphic materials created by E. F. Meade, L. M. Greene, Dr. Akladakov (?), Arthur Goodland, Louis Poitras, Dick Pattinson, C. Gades, Dr. Foskett, and Morley Raven, and collected by E. F. Meade while documenting and studying petroglyphs and pictographs in the West Coast.
Series also contains some graphic materials documenting petroglyphs outside of Canada, including the United States of America, Russia, Scotland, and Guyana.

Textual materials

Series consists of written X̄a’islak̓ala (Haisla language) documentation and learning materials by the Dutch linguist Hein Vink (also known as Henry Vink). These language materials consist of a dictionary, one beginner course book, and one advanced level Haisla learning course book. The series also contains written tellings of traditional Kitimat stories, as told by Jeffrey Legaic and collected by Gisele Mendel.

Exhibit records

Series documents Cunningham’s responsibilities as exhibits designer, and consists of records related to the planning and implementation of various exhibits since the late 1980s. In addition to his role as designer, Cunningham has also been involved in producing exhibit proposals; assisting with travelling exhibits; and developing exhibition policies and guidelines. Records include artists’ statements and artwork; banners; calligraphy; case lists; contact prints/proofs; contracts; correspondence; exhibition catalogues; exhibition panels; exhibition proposals; exhibition text; guidelines; invitations; labels; loan agreements; measurements; memoranda; minutes; negatives; object lists; photographs; photocopy of artworks; plans; policies; reports; schedules; and sketches.

Series consists of records associated with the functions and responsibilities assigned to Miriam Clavir in her role as the conservator of the Museum of Anthropology, and/or are related to the Conservation Area, as well as to her teaching activities. Included are: correspondence, memoranda, reports (published and unpublished), evaluations, building (architectural) plans, photographs, slides, e-mails, facsimiles, computer disks, and audio cassettes.

This series relates to the personal history and life of Harry Hawthorn and his wife Audrey. The series primarily consists of photographs with some textual records, slides, and photographic negatives. A number of files consist of family photograph albums, featuring images of Harry Hawthorn’s family and childhood, his children, and a separate album relates to Harry Hawthorn’s Travels in BC between 1947 and 1951. Multiple files relate to Audrey Hawthorn, and three files illustrate a compiled account of interactions between the Hawthorns and Bill Reid that span from the 1950’s through 2000.
