Finances

Series consists of material reflecting the financial life of the museum.
Records in the series consist of correspondence, budgets, ledger sheets, memoranda, receipts, notes, requisition books, expense ledgers, receipts, account statements and statements of purchases.

The series is arranged into 3 subseries:
Subseries A: Budget
Subseries B: Accounts
Subseries C: Funding

Tsimshian files

Research notes compiled by Wilson Duff during his work on the Barbeau/Beynon material held at the National Museum of Canada (now Canadian Museum of History). This research, focused specifically on the Tsimshian culture, includes correspondence addressed to and/or written by Duff, files relating to the Nishga Land Claim of which Duff was involved as a witness, and typed manuscripts.

Photographic records

Series consists of photographs, negatives, and slides taken or acquired by Duff during his study of North West coast culture and art. Included are views of objects, exhibits, places, trips, events, and people. There are six sub-series.

Sound Recordings

Cassette and sound reel recordings of lectures given by Duff for Anthropology 301 and 304 and at external events. Also included are various interviews by Duff and taped narratives, songs, and stories by Maxime George (Fort Fraser), Donald Gray (Haqwilget), Johnson Williams (Kispiox), Maxine George (Dakelh) and “Shuswap Songs” by Amy August, Mrs. Wellard, Henry Samson, and Basil Dennis.

Exhibitions

Series consists of material relating to exhibitions mounted by the museum. Record forms in this series include correspondence, memoranda, notes, sketches, maps, newspaper clippings, insurance evaluations, inventories, ephemera, sketches, maps, receipts, plans and photographs.

Guatemalan Highland Exhibit

The records in this series relate to the planning and development of the 1976 Guatemalan Highlands textile exhibit. The records in the series are primarily visual materials, however other subjects include the design of wall texts for the exhibit and notes on the items to be included in the show. While slides are the predominant form of material in this series other record formats include notes, memoranda, negatives, and photographs.

Summer and Sunday programmes records

Series consists of an evaluation and research notes relating to the summer and Sunday educational programmes offered at the Museum of Anthropology. This includes records pertaining to youth, senior, Haida House and English as a Second Language (ESL) programming.

Northwest Coast research

Series consists of materials Duff created and gathered on various Northwest Coast tribes including Haida, Tlingit, Tsimshian and Kwakiutl. The documents include handwritten notes, typed articles, correspondence and reference materials such as photographs from other museums, Photostats and reprints and originals of articles.

Donation letter

Series consists of a letter written by May Ashurrtt to Museum Director Michael Ames on October 31, 1977. The letter provides details of the donated photographs and the life of Frederich H. Maude, the photographer.

Personal Records

Series consists of records (primarily photographic slides) documenting Minn Sjolseth's travels with her husband Anthony Carter to visit events and communities at locations including Haida Gwaii, Ketchikan, Kitwancool, Kingcome Inlet, Kispiox, Gitsegukla, Kitwanga and Skidegate among others. The contents of the series reflect First Nations cultures in British Columbia throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including Haida, Nuu-Chah-Nulth, Skwxwú7mesh, Nisga'a, Kwakwaka'wakw. The photographs document potlatches, totem poles, villages, landscapes, as well as portraits of individuals. The series also contains files with a small number of photographs documenting Sjolseth's paintings on these subjects, as well as Sjolseth at work on her art on location in these communities and locations.

Photojournalism records

Series consists of materials related to Carter’s work as a photographic correspondent, primarily from Carter's work for Canada Rides Magazine documenting HRH Prince Charles' visit to Alberta for the centennial of the Treaty 7 signing between the Crown and Blackfoot First Nations. Files include photographs, textual materials, and other ephemera.

Visual Documentation of Clothing and Textiles

This series consists entirely of graphic materials. While the materials are not accompanied by any contextual information, it can be assumed that the images found in this series were taken by Ruus on various trips. Specifically this photographic documentation examines textiles from China, Macedonia, Croatia, Slovakia, the Circum-Polar region, India, the South Western United States, South America, the Middle-East and Europe. Record forms included in this series are slides, photographs, and memoranda.

Collection/Storage

This series contains material relating to Ruus’s work with the Museum of Anthropology’s collection and the development of the visible storage display. The majority of the records focus on visible storage including research Ruus did on other institutions that made use of visible storage. Other subjects addressed in the records found in this series touch on miscellaneous issues related to the collection including such issues as storage, display and inventories.

Correspondence, news clippings, installation and exhibition photographs, and press kits from the Images: Stone: B.C. exhibit that was displayed at the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Greater Victoria Art Gallery. Also includes 2 cassette tapes from the Vancouver Art Gallery dated May 6, 1975 and 1 U-Matic videocassette titled “Images: Stone B.C.: Hilary Stewart, Wilson Duff” dated May 16, 1975.

Teaching Records

Series consists of records documenting the initial development and progress of the two courses taught by Mrs. Hawthorn: Anthropology 331-Primitive Arts and Mythology; and Anthropology 431-Museum Philosophy and Methods (1963-1978). It includes bibliographies, course notes and assignments, bibliographies, correspondence, and photographic materials.

UBC, museum & artist records

Series consists of images related to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC and the Museum of Anthropology (MOA). Focus is on photographic representations of First Nations artists and artwork, including MOA installations and exhibits by Robert Davidson, Jr., Sharon Hitchcock, Henry Hunt, Gerry Marks, Rufus Moody, Norm Tait, and Francis Williams. Series also includes images of installations for the National Museum of Ethnology in Osaka, Japan. Files are generally arranged chronologically according to artist and/or subject matter. Except where noted with square brackets, the titles for files and items in this series were taken from annotations on the original material.
