Galleries and exhibitions development

This series reflects Krug’s involvement in developing and assessing various projects related to exhibitions and galleries. It includes records relating to Krug’s proposal for an audio tape project that would document the reflections of various people who had had significant involvement with the Museum; records created during the process of soliciting proposals for designing and building a prototype visible storage case; a report on virtual collections; drafts, reports, and correspondence created during the planning of Gallery 3; and records from the Exhibitions Committee. Materials include proposals, correspondence, minutes, reports, memorandums, and architectural drawings.

Published and Unpublished Works

Series consists of draft and final copies of Halpin essays, reviews and manuscripts. Some drafts are partly typed and partly handwritten. The reviews include both Halpin’s reviews of works by other authors as well as reviews of Halpin’s own published works. Some files include correspondence relating to publishing a paper or a review.

The series is divided into the following sub-series:

APEC textual records

This series is comprised of official APEC results reports, handbooks, and ministerial joint statements; newspapers, news clippings, magazines, hand-written notes, stickers, postcards, and other materials. These materials were created, used, and saved during the APEC Leaders’ Meeting at the Museum of Anthropology in November 1997. Material generated from events such as campus and city protests that occurred because of APEC are also present in this collection. These materials include University of British Columbia (UBC) campus publications and Canadian and American newspapers and magazines; press releases from protest groups; materials on The 1997 People’s Summit on APEC, the Women’s Conference Against APEC, APEC-Alert, Democracy Street, Anti-APEC Summit, and other anti-APEC organisations; photocopies of pictures of graffiti at MOA; the Musqueam Speech that was cancelled by the Prime Minister’s Office; printouts of various web pages concerning APEC; and other materials.

Community Service Files

Series consists of budgets, contracts, correspondence, minutes of committee meetings, speeches, lecture notes and other textual records relating to Halpin’s community service. Includes files relating to Halpin’s role as member of various committees and professional associations including the Canadian Ethnology Society and the Native Studies Art Association of Canada, files relating to Halpin’s participation in various conferences, seminars and workshops including those organized by the Canadian Museums Association, the British Columbia Provincial Museum and the Vancouver Institute, and files relating to Halpin’s role as private consultant for projects sponsored by organizations such as the National Museum of Man and the John Paul Getty Foundation. Halpin’s professional opinions were also sought in radio interviews such as the taped CBC interview in which Halpin discussed Bill Reid and his art. There are also two videocassette recordings of Halpin’s participation in the National Native Indian Artists’ Symposium and an event at the Banff Centre.

Museum of Anthropology projects

The series consists of records created by Dr. Halpin’s involvement in various projects at the Museum of Anthropology. Records include correspondence, memoranda, grant applications, reports, permissions, photo requests, architectural material, pamphlets, newsletters, contracts, budgets, labels, photographs, negatives, contact sheets, a computer floppy disk, and compacts disks. The records relate to museum-wide projects such as label creation for the museum collection, the commission for the construction and design of the MOA doors, the opening of Gallery III in 1993, and the expansion of the museum in 1984. Records also relate to individual endeavours undertaken by Dr. Halpin such as CD-Rom projects, research on totem poles, photo projects, conservation, and film and video production.

Personal and missionary photographs

Series consist of loose photographs, a newspaper clipping, photomechanical prints, and one photomechanical print album produced and collected throughout Rev. Crosby’s personal and missionary life, including portraits and group photographs of aboriginal individuals and/or missionaries, photographs of churches, schools, homes, hospitals, and other buildings, and aboriginal cultural and ceremonial objects (artifacts and curios). In addition, photographic events include carvings, church congregations, gathering of aboriginal children from residential schools, weddings, and funerals. Geographic locations depicted in the photographs include (but are not limited to): Chilliwack, Cultus Lake, Fort Essington, Fort Rupert, Fraser River, Greenville, Gold Harbour, Massett Village, Naas River, Port Simpson, River Inlet, Skidegate (Haida), Yale, and Vancouver Island (Nanaimo, Victoria) all in British Columbia; as well as, Whatcom County Washington, USA; Fort Wraugh, Alaska; Port Chester, Alaska; Montreal, Quebec; Norway; and Labrador. Series includes photographers and photograph studios such as Noah Shakespeare, Richard & Hanna Maynard, Carlo Gentile, J.G. Parks, Thos. E. Perkins, Geo Rirton, B.F. Howland & Co., J.M. Jacobsen, Wadds Bros., N. Caple & Co., Hugill, R.Z. Tashiro, Butcher & Co., Brooks, Skene Lowe, Nathan Joseph & Co., and S.A. Spencer. Photographers Carlo Gentile (whose Victoria studio was purchased by Noah Shakespeare) and Frederick Dally (whose negatives were partly acquired by Richard & Hanna Maynard) may also be included but unidentified. Series includes photomechanical prints, albumen prints, cabinet cards, carte-de-visites, gelatin printing-out papers, gelatin developing-out papers, a ferrotype, stereograph prints, and other unidentified print types.

Museum of Anthropology committees

Series consists of records pertaining to committees associated with planning and administration at the Museum of Anthropology. Records relate to the following committees: the Acquisition committee, the Public Programmes and Education committee, the Repatriation committee, the Management committee, the Visual Arts and Museums Advisory committee, and the Ways and Means committee. Records include minutes, policy reports, proposal forms, budget proposals & reports, newspaper clippings, preservation reports, exhibition proposals, handwritten notes, reports on access issues, object lists, and correspondence.

Museum of Anthropology events

Series consists of correspondence, memoranda, newsletters, pamphlets and
newspaper clippings of events that Dr. Halpin either organized, or assisted, while working at the Museum of Anthropology. Records relate to the opening of the museum in 1976 and to various visiting scholars who gave lectures or organized activities between 1975-1986. Also included are records relating to two events which took place at the Museum of Anthropology: the Norman Tait Barbecue, an open public event for all to attend; and Inuit Art Round Table, during which issues related to Inuit art were discussed by a panel of curators and First Nations people.

Textiles and Costumes

Series consists of an updated and expanded version of Anne M. Lambert’s textile book entitled “Storage of Textiles and Costumes: Guidelines for Decision Making” that was originally published in 1983. Darren Morrison was going to do the design work but did not because the project was cancelled and the updated version was never published.

Research Files

Series consists of notes, audio cassettes, video cassettes, card catalogues and hard copies of email correspondence created from Halpin’s research, as well as notes and paperwork created from research projects conducted by Halpin and research grant applications.

Repatriation Forum

Series consists of records produced during the planning and execution of the 1998 Repatriation Forum. Pam Brown coordinated the Forum, which was held in the First Nations House of Learning and co-sponsored by UBC MOA, the Museum of the American Indian, and the Smithsonian Institute. Following the Forum, Pam Brown solicited permission from speakers to include their talks in a booklet of the Forum proceedings. Records in the series include invitations to speakers, registration records (including payment information), correspondence, permission forms, evaluation forms, and transcripts.

Photographs

Series contains photographs collected for curatorial research by MOA staff, mostly relating to First Nations geographical areas, cultures, and artists. The series also includes photographs documenting MOA activities, staff, and volunteers.

The photographs are organized into two subseries:

Interviews and Event Recording

Series includes audio and video interviews with Agnes Alfred and other members of the Kwakwaka'wakw community. Series also includes translations of some of those interviews or sections by Daisy Sewid-Smith

Exhibition planning

Series consists of records relating to exhibition planning carried out by Rosa Ho in her capacity as Curator of Art and Public programmes. Included in the records are planning records for exhibitions, installations, and performances hosted by and produced in whole or in part by the Museum of Anthropology.
Records include correspondence, memoranda, financial records, artist lists, object lists, artifact descriptions, exhibition programs, hand written notes, exhibition announcements, designs for labels, photographs, transcripts, grant proposals, loan agreements, artifacts, newspaper clippings, photocopied scholarly articles, a grant application for the “Chilcotin War” project, a Musqueam weaving proposal, a telephone transcription, an audio cassette and exhibition proposals.

Collections - information, acquisition and documentation

Series consists of records pertaining to the Museum of Anthropology’s collections and to legal issues surrounding the housing of cultural artifacts. Areas of focus include records on Chinese cultural property guidelines and the Shaw Collection, Inuit art and discussions on ownership of Archeological materials.
Records include minutes, email print outs, newspaper clippings written in Chinese characters, transcriptions of First Nations’ myths and legends, object lists, interview transcriptions, scholarly articles, correspondence, handwritten notes, consultation service forms, agendas, reports, audio cassettes and a b&w photograph.

Volunteers and education

Series consists of records pertaining to the operations of the Volunteer Associates and to the Anthropology Shop Volunteers. Also included are records relating to education programming.
Series contains training guidelines, bibliographies, newspaper clippings, gallery- guided walk instructions, curriculum development records, exhibit pamphlets, correspondence, photocopies of scholarly articles, handwritten notes, course agenda, evaluation reports, tape cassettes, and training session reports.

MOA Space Needs and Development Options Reporting process

This series documents the process choosing a contractor to complete a functional needs analysis and feasibility study of MOA’s space needs and subsequently of soliciting proposals for a detailed study of museum space needs and development options. The series contains drafts and copies of the initial call for expressions of interest for a functional needs analysis and includes the Preliminary Functional Needs Analysis report produced by LORD Cultural Resource Planning and Management, Inc. Other records were produced during the process of soliciting statements of interest for a study of museum space needs and development options. These records demonstrate the consultative approach used to rank the proposals received in response and also document the ongoing process of defining MOA’s space needs. Materials produced during these activities include proposals, correspondence, charts, correspondence, reports, notes, and tables. The series also includes minutes from several committees the activities of which relate to special planning. These include the minutes of the Cliff Erosion Committee and the minutes from 1990-1991 of the Visible Storage Committee.

Artwork and Exhibition Records

Series consists of records documenting Minn Sjolseth’s practice as a painter and printmaker from the 1960s to the 1990s. Records include photographic documentation of Sjolseth’s paintings, other artwork, and exhibitions; newspaper clippings and other ephemera related to her artistic career; invitations, press releases, and one sheets from several of her exhibitions; textual records relating to her artworks and artistic career (including price lists, appraisal documents, and artist files from institutions); biographical and memorial pamphlets about Sjolseth; a scrapbook containing photographs and ephemera related to her art practice and personal life; and a sketchbook containing drawings and ephemera.

Administration and Planning

Series consists of general administrative records for the Collections unit at MOA, as well as planning documents for specific MOA exhibits. Material includes correspondence, object lists, object condition reports, exhibit travel schedules, and other general collections and exhibit planning records.
