Kitwancool Territories

Item is a copied map that shows territorial boundaries of the Kitwancool, territories of the Wolf and Frog clans, villages, and numbered sites. Inset: Location map. No legend provided for numbered sites. Based on "Territories of the Kitwancool" map included in Histories, Territories, and Laws of the Kitwancool, found in Duff's textual records, box 2, file 8. Mended with document repair tape in 1984. Encapsulated.

Anthony Island slides

File consists of photographs taken at Anthony Island, Haida Gwaii, on a 1957 trip. The majority of the images appear to be at the Ninstints village site on Anthony Island.

An accrual of 20 slides was added to this file in March 2022, from accession 2022-3. Most appear to be duplicates of slides already in the file. These 20 slides have not been digitized.

HBH Anthony Is. 1957 [slides]

File consists of photographs taken during a 1957 trip to Anthony Island, part of Haida Gwaii, to survey and/or acquire and preserve totem poles from the island. This expedition was undertaken as part of the B.C. Totem Pole Preservation Committee. This committee was set up in 1953 by members of MOA, UBC's Department of Anthropology, and the BC Provincial Museum, with support from the lumber and fishing industries. Their aim was to survey existing poles of the province, and to acquire and preserve all those not in use. H.R. MacMillan and W.C. Koerner supported the purchase and transportation of the poles which were brought to Vancouver and Victoria from coastal villages.

Members of the 1957 expedition included Wilson Duff, Michael Kew, Harry Hawthorn, John Smyly, and Bill Reid.

2 - Beach Grove Excavation

File contains sixteen negatives taken by Barwick at an excavation at Beach Grove in the Fraser River delta in June of 1957, likely done under the guidance of Charles Borden, a Lecturer and later Professor of Archaeology at UBC who studied the Beach Grove site from ca. 1955 to 1958. Notes on the envelope indicate these negatives include images of D. N. Abbott, Colin McCafferty, and Nansi Swayze.

Alert Bay Photographs and Postcards

File consists of 7 photographs and 7 postcards purchased by Barwick in Summer 1958. Photographs document a centennial celebration held in Alert Bay in 1958 by a local photographer. Postcard images depict buildings in Alert Bay (St. Michael's Indian Residential School, a community hall, hospital), a cemetery, and totem poles, carvings, and masks and were taken between 1949-1950.

Photocopy of a manuscript about coppers from Alert Bay, BC. Front page notes that it was "sent by GW(?) Hunt, Port Hardy, BC." It also has a stamp from the "Department of Mines geological Survey, received Mar 26, 1924. Division of Anthropology."
