View of a Kwakiutl totem pole on Alert Bay, Cormorant Island, British Columbia. Pole stands in Nimpkish Band Cemetery and was carved by Willie Seaweed with Joe Seaweed. It is a memorial to Billie Moon and was carved in 1931. It depicts a Thunderbird grasping the head of Dzoonokwa, a giantess. Carved by Mungo Martin 1951. Erected in UBC Totem Park. Moved to MOA in 1970’s but not erected in Great Hall until 2012 after repairs.

Carved by Charlie James c. 1900 (Fort Rupert). Collected by Marius Barbeau and Arthur Price. The pole was re-adzed and re-painted by Kwakwaka'wakw carver Mungo Martin before shipping in 1947. Repainted and repaired by Ellen Neel (1949) and by Mungo Martin (1950-51). It stood at Totem Pole Park, UBC Campus until it was re-located to the Museum's Great Hall c. 1976.

One of a pair purchased in 1947 from collectors Marius Barbeau and Arthur Price. Collected from Alert Bay. The piece was repainted and repaired (including the replacement of the wings) by Ellen Neel (1949) and by Mungo Martin (1950-51).

Pole is largely uncarved, except for a bird perched on top. Mountains are visible in the background.

Item is a hand-tinted glass lantern slide of a street with five totems. According to annotations, photograph was taken in Alert Bay.

Image depicts canoes, house, house posts, and totem poles on a shoreline in Masset, Haida Gwaii, B. C. Handwritten inscription on the verso reads "This is a Indian Village in Masset B. C. at the turn of the century. As you can see there are a lot of wooden shacks, totem poles and canoes. it is a very wild and remote area [redacted]. grandfather Crosby used to travel to these remoat [sic] villages by canoe." Image appears to be reproduction of a039351.
