Fonds consists of various photographic materials and a small number of textual records. Glass plate negatives document totem poles, house fronts, street scenes, church groups, school groups, weddings, the local store and maritime subjects in Alert Bay. Textual records include a Christmas card from Alert Bay Radio and two small pamphlets of photography instructions printed by "J. Mennie, Developing & Printing Service." The oldest negative dates from 1862, though the identity of its photographer is unknown.

The fonds consists of 478 photographs, predominantly of students at the St. Michael’s Residential School in Alert Bay. Beverley Brown and her friends took the photographs between ca. 1937 and ca. 1945 using Brown’s camera. Photographs from this period include shots of the students with their friends and of social events, as well as posed class photographs. These class photographs were taken by school supervisors who subsequently sold the prints to other students. Other photographs were taken in Brown’s hometown, Bella Bella, and in the area of the Namu cannery. These show weddings, fishing boats, landscapes, and buildings. Peter Mason Sr., Brown’s father, had the photographs developed in Vancouver.

The fonds has been arranged into three series:

Fonds consists of a set of tapes of interviews and the corresponding interview transcripts with Dr. Charles (Carl) E. Borden, late Professor Emeritus of Archaeology at the University of British Columbia, in June/July 1978. Additional textual records include comments made off-tape by Dr. Charles E. Borden during the course of the interviews. The interviews were conducted, transcribed, and edited by Anne Williams for her thesis Carl Borden and archaeology in British Columbia: an interactive history. The interviews relate to the social history of archaeology in British Columbia and were made possible by a British Columbia Youth Employment Program grant.

Fonds consists of records created by McLennan during his employment at the Museum. Fonds has been arranged into six series. The first series is titled Exhibits and relates to McLennan’s role first as a designer and photographer of exhibits and later as a curator of exhibits. Each exhibit is arranged into a separate subseries. Some of the photographs were taken by staff who worked for McLennan.

The second series is titled Projects and events. This series relates to McLennan’s role as photographer. He has recorded many events and documented projects through the use of photography. On some projects he also took on the role of designer.

The third series is titled Multiversity galleries and contains materials related to the creation of the Multiversity gallery space which occurred as part of the Partnership of Peoples Renewal project from 2007-2010.

The fourth series is titled general research and contains materials related to McLennan’s research in art on the northwest coast of British Columbia. The research series has been sub-divided into four sub-series: museums, archives and subject files, artist files, culture photographs and books.

The fifth series is titled Bill Reid and contains materials created and collected about Bill Reid and his work by McLennan.

The sixth series is titled Administration, public relations and correspondence and relates to McLennan’s administrative role at MOA, containing administrative records.

Additional digital records from this fonds are still being processed and will be added to this finding aid at a later date.

The fonds consists of 26 colour slides, including ceremonies and traditions related to weddings and male circumcision taken in Tunisia, as well as scenery and people in Algeria.

Fonds contains scanned images from two photo albums attributed to Robert Reford. One album shows images from his time in British Columbia (1889-1891). These photographs were likely taken by Reford. The second album contains images from the Arctic. It is not clear who took these photos, as there is no record of Reford having spent time in the Arctic.

The fonds consists of records created and collected by Harry B. Hawthorn in a number of different capacities: as researcher, professor, Dean of Anthropology and Director of the Museum of Anthropology. Textual records in the fonds include correspondence, transcripts, research notes and clippings from publications. Much of the graphic materials relate to Harry Hawthorn’s interactions with Indigenous communities as an anthropologist, a professor, and as the Director of MOA. Other images relate to his personal life, documenting his youth in New Zealand, his life as a father and anthropologist, and his later established professional roles.

The records in this fonds pertain to Rev. Crosby’s missionary activities and personal life in British Columbia, Canada. Personal life and missionary activity records include: photographs, bibles, hymns, scriptures, and one textile object.

The APEC collection was established in 1997 when the Museum of Anthropology (MOA) hired two students, Todd Tubutis and Maria Roth. These two students were supervised by Director and Professor Ruth B. Phillips, and instructed to gather information in a variety of formats that would serve to represent the events of the 1997 APEC Leaders Meeting at MOA. These materials, in addition to their archival value, were to be used in a public exhibition at the museum and for other museum educational projects.

The collection consists of materials gathered by Todd Tubutis and Maria Roth in 1997 and 1998. These two students were hired to gather information in a variety of formats that would serve to represent the events of the 1997 APEC Leaders’ Meeting at the Museum. These records consist of textual materials, sound recordings, photographs, posters and banners, and physical artifacts. The records include: photographs of the Museum of Anthropology in preparation for the Leaders’ Meeting and protests against APEC at UBC and throughout Vancouver; posters and banners collected at protests at UBC and the Museum of Anthropology; radio broadcast recordings from UBC campus radio (CITR) on the day of the APEC Leaders’ Meeting and heavy student protesting; official APEC paraphernalia (both textual and graphic); textual records of the impact APEC had at the Museum of Anthropology; newspaper and journal articles concerning the APEC Leaders’ Meeting at the Museum of Anthropology; press releases from protest groups, the Prime Minister’s Office, and APEC; concerns of the Musqueam Nation regarding APEC; and coverage of the APEC Leaders’ Meeting in U.S. newspapers.

The fonds consists of records created by Carol Mayer at the University of British Columbia as Curator of Collections and Curator of Ethnology and Ceramics at the Museum of Anthropology, as a Department of Anthropology & Sociology Instructor, as Curator of Africa/Pacific, and as Curatorial Department Head. Also included are records relating to her role within the MOA Exhibition Committee. The fonds also contains records related to her role as an instructor at the Emily Carr College of Art and Design. The records consist mainly of textual material with a small amount of graphic material and small artifacts. The records include correspondence, memoranda, incoming loan agreements, exhibit receipts, exhibit proposals and forms, policy drafts, news releases, pamphlets, minutes of committee meetings, budgets, agendas, schedules, exhibition lists, facility reports, display labels, CD’s, sketches, journals, transcribed interviews, research notes, negatives, slides and photographs.

The collection includes material relating to Alert Bay that was created or collected by Thomas and Mildred Laurie, as well as photographs and textual records created or received by James Barclay Williams, who bequeathed the records to Mildred Laurie. The collection includes a photo album, photographs, postcards, correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and a calendar. Photographs document Alert Bay and the surrounding area, including the B.C. Packers store, Christ Church, the native cemetery, St. Michael’s Residential School and Preventorium, Canada Packers, Hardy Bay, totem poles, a long house, and the Nimpkish Hotel. Photographs also document local events, including potlatches, weddings, an outdoor salmon barbeque, BC centenary celebrations in 1958, native ceremonies, and a visit by the Governor General.

The fonds consists of the following series: source books by Kathie Roads (1970-1992); resignations (1976-1988); minutes (1976-1989); correspondence and memos (1975-1990); education and training (1976-1988); annual reports (1976-1989); photographs (1979-1982); subject files (1976-1991); and hours and attendance (1976-1989).

Fonds consists of physical and intellectual descriptions of objects in the form of photographs and textual records that provide relevant background information and bibliographic citations relating to Koerner’s personal collections. Fonds consts of two series: W. and M. Koerner ceramics collection and Northwest Coast Indian art.

Fonds consists of an empty photo album with a wooden cover, hand-painted by C. Doudawarch (?), a resident of Port Simpson.

Fonds includes 20 audio reels used to record speakers of the Secwepemc language of Secwepemctsin. Gibson created the recordings while conducting research for his dissertation, “Shuswap Grammatical Structure” (1973). Other materials include a copy of a photograph of Gibson with two of his informants, and a copy of his obituary.

Fonds documents Brant’s pre-doctoral research in Burma. As a Fulbright scholar working with the United States Educational Foundation, Brant submitted quarterly reports to the foundation detailing his arrival and adjustment to life in Burma, as well as his sociological research in the community of Tadagale and other areas of the country. Brant also provided the U.S. Foreign Service with his observations of life in the Shan States, where Brant and his wife first lived when they arrived in Burma in 1949. After returning to the United States in 1950, Brant published articles on the research he completed while in Burma. Records in this series include academic and government reports; articles; Brant’s curriculum vitae; a digitized slide show and 8 mm movie; a grant application; notes; and photographic negatives and prints. It is likely that most of the photographs were taken by Jane Brant, but these are not identified.

The fonds consists of records relating to African culture and craftsmanship. It includes photographs and slides of Ivory Coast and Nigerian crafts and cultural events, correspondence, research notes about African handicrafts, typed anthropological portraits of craftspeople and related drawings, postcards and magazine clippings.

The fonds consists predominantly of slides of various petroglyphs and pictographs, primarily from locations on the Northwest Coast of British Columbia. The fonds also contains location charts of petroglyphs and the creator’s typed notes about various sites.

This fonds consists of textual records, photographs, negatives, slides, audio recordings, compact discs and video on DVD that relate to Kovanic’s academic and film career. The fonds relates especially to her work in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, but also captures her work with First Nations on the Northwest coast of British Columbia.

The fonds consists of two albums containing images accumulated by James and Mary Fyfe Smith during visits to Japan between 1911 and 1914.
