Series consists of images found in or related to Carter's 1969 published work. Focus is on photographic representations of First Nations communities and individuals throughout Haida Gwaii. Geographic locations include Anthony Island (Ninstins), Masset, Skedans, Skidegate, Tanu and Yan. Series also contains images related to the 1969 Masset pole raising ceremony in honor of Robert Davidson, Jr. Files are generally arranged chronologically according to subject matter and/or locality. Except where noted with square brackets, the titles for files and items in this series were taken from annotations on the original material.

External relations

Series consists of material accumulated as a result of the museum’s interaction with the public. Records in this series are found in the forms of correspondence, press releases, ephemera, memoranda, account statements, questionnaires, minutes, and newspaper clippings.

Teaching/training/research

Series consists of material relating to teaching and other educational activities carried out by the museum and its staff as well as by individuals not directly associated with the museum but who have produced research related to the museum’s activities. The records in this series includes photocopies of articles, notes, correspondence, published materials, letters of recommendation, memoranda, reports, and teaching materials.

Series consists of notes and papers written by Duff when he was an anthropology student at UBC.

Human resources

Series consists of material related to the management of employment and labour at MOA. The series focuses primarily on long term employees however small files on more temporary positions such as those employed to do carvings by the museum are also included. The series has been arranged chronologically by date within subseries. The series consists of curriculum vitas, memoranda, notes, correspondence, newspaper and magazine clippings, ephemera, time sheets, receipts, account statements, position postings, and appointment notices, programs, policy documents and an audio cassette.

Abundant Rivers records

Series consists of images found in or related to Carter’s 1972 published work. Focus is on photographic representations of First Nations communities and individuals throughout British Columbia, including multiple images of Chief Dan George (Tsleil-Waututh nation). Series also includes images of totem poles and villages of Ans’pa yaxw (Kispiox) and Gitsegukla nations. Files are generally arranged chronologically according to subject matter and/or locality. Except where noted with square brackets, the titles for files and items in this series were taken from annotations on the original material.

Personal records

Series consists of records related to Carter’s family life and travels with Minn Sjolseth, general research, self-published writing projects, and the posthumous management of his estate by Alan and Laila Campbell. Records include photographs taken by Carter, research photographs and articles, drafts by Carter and Alan Campbell, self-published materials, notes and poetry, correspondence, various certificates and licenses, and scrapbooks. The series also includes files that contain personal photographs mixed with photographs from publications documented in other series in this fonds. Wherever possible, links have been made to the relevant file in other series.

Somewhere Between records

Series consists of images found in or related to Carter's 1966 published work. Focus is on photographic representations of First Nations communities along B.C.'s North coast, including the Xwemelch'stn (Coast Salish), Kynoc, Kitisug, Klemtu and Tsleil-Waututh nations. Files are generally arranged chronologically according to locality and/or subject matter. Teaching and Research

Series consists of slides representing the inventory of Central Coast Salish art photographed by Dr. Kew during his visits to various North American museums and the British Museum in preparation for the exhibition Visions of Power Symbols of Wealth: Central Coast Salish Sculpture and Engraving. The images illustrate a wide variety of traditional art objects including masks, adzes, spindle whorls, mat creasers, and totems poles, as well as various jewelry, instruments, and utensils. The series also includes two volumes of the Central Coast Salish Computerized Art Inventory, which provides a detailed physical description of each art object.

Sound Recordings

Series consists of the sound recordings about, by, or related to the Museum of Anthropology. Sound recordings can be found in many collections and fonds in the MOA Archives; the recordings in this General Media collection are those that do not belong to a more specific archival collection, usually because their provenance is not known.

Public programmes/events

Series consists of material relating to the activities surrounding public programmes and events planned by the museum to engage the public. Also see audio tapes MOA 70 and 71 which consist of Audrey Hawthorn, accompanied by Elvi Whittaker, giving a tour of the museum. Record forms in this series include correspondence, newspaper clippings, memoranda, photographic negatives, ephemera, plans, budgets, financial statements, receipts, and a copy of the June 9, 1976 edition of UBC Reports, and a copy of Canadian Art Review VI/I/1979.

Collections Files

Series consists of correspondence and memoranda, minutes, reports, collections lists, draft copies, handwritten notations, journal articles, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, slides, and other textual records related to the Museum of Anthropology’s collections. Includes records related to the acquisition of new collection pieces, including records related to the museum’s Acquisitions Committee and the donation of particular items and collections to the museum. Also included are records related to the de-accessioning and repatriation of museum collection items. The series also includes records related to the preservation, conservation, and storage of collections, and records related to the museum’s collections in general.

Photographic Materials

Series contains graphic materials created by E. F. Meade, L. M. Greene, Dr. Akladakov (?), Arthur Goodland, Louis Poitras, Dick Pattinson, C. Gades, Dr. Foskett, and Morley Raven, and collected by E. F. Meade while documenting and studying petroglyphs and pictographs in the West Coast.
Series also contains some graphic materials documenting petroglyphs outside of Canada, including the United States of America, Russia, Scotland, and Guyana.

School programmes

Series consists of material related to school visits to the museum, both by educators and students. The records in this series consist of correspondence and ephemera.

Maps

Maps created, acquired, and used by Duff in his research and teaching activities. The materials show geographical features; location and boundaries of territories and villages of Northwest coast native people; reserves; language families and distribution, influences, and historical features. Included are ms. maps; and copied, traced, outline and published maps, most with added ms. notations.

The Base maps sub-series consists of topographic maps produced as bases for the creation of other maps to show the locations and territorial boundaries of native people within British Columbia. Maps include ms. notations by Duff.

The Territory maps sub-series consists of ms. maps; and base, outline, copied and photocopied maps with ms. notations. Items show location and boundaries of native territories in British Columbia and the United States. Includes maps showing extent and detail of Tsimshian territory; Kispiox sites; Kitwancool territory and sites; South Kwakiutl territory, villages and tribes. Notations identify some place names and villages.

The Reserve maps sub-series consist of copied and published maps with ms. notations showing the location and extent of various reserves. Some acreage is also included.

The Miscellaneous Maps sub-series consists of published, copied and outline maps showing language families in North America, influences on British Columbia native people, historical distribution of native people in B.C., and Vancouver Island in the 19th century.

Research and Publications Records

Series consists primarily of records relating to the publication of Art of the Kwakiutl Indians (first published 1967), including correspondence with various publishing houses, reviews of the book, research notes, copies and revisions of the book, bibliographies, appendices and documents relating to the photographs used in Art of the Kwakiutl Indians. The series also contains several drafts of A Labour of Love (first published 1993), book reviews written by A. Hawthorn about other authors' works, research materials for other publications and exhibits at MoA, and three folders entitled Kwakiutl Ceremonial Art, Museum of Anthropology U.B.C. Vol. 1-3 (may have been intended as a catalogue of MoA holdings).

Exhibits

Series consists of records created by McLennan in the course of planning and designing various exhibits, both at MOA and on behalf of MOA for other institutions such as the World Expo in 1986. Each specific exhibit comprises its own sub-series. Graphic material includes photographic material depicting artifacts used in the exhibit, artifacts at other institutions that could potentially be used for exhibit, staff involved in exhibit, events held surrounding the opening and closing of an exhibit including any special ceremonies and other people and items related to the exhibit. Textual material includes label text, research conducted in order to strengthen the exhibits, correspondence between McLennan and cultural heritage institutions, administrative records (i.e. budgets and finances, schedules and time frames) and public relations materials.
Subseries 1 through subseries 64 represent an earlier time frame when McLennan’s role at MOA was more related to exhibit and graphic design than to actively curating exhibits. Subseries 65 through subseries 81 represent McLennan’s increased role as a curator of exhibits which he often researched, curated and did the exhibit design.
